  1. The guy that I got this truck from sent to his friends house to look at another one. This is what was there. The frame is bent. The glass looks good except for a couple rock dings. It has a Ford Courier rear end in it. The grill, door handles, and molding look pretty good. Later engine with a 5 speed. It's not for me, but I think he is ready to sale it. He wouldn't say what he was hoping to get for it. He also told me that the original rear end from this 1960 truck is in my 1964. Is that pretty similar to what the 1964 came with?
  2. I spent some time cleaning it, and I still don't see anything. My J15 is stamped really clear in the same area.
  3. Thanks guys! I am glad to hear that it is an E series. The transmission tunnel is really hacked up, and it doesn't look like my other J series trannys on the shifter part. I was just going off the ID tag for the year.
  4. I got this 320 today. I have wanted one since around 1993 when I saw one in Bellingham. It is rough, there is a little bit floor left in it. I need to get rid of the horrible wheels and tires very soon! Maybe Friday. I can't tell what engine is in it. It has the column shift gauge bezel, with a hacked in floor shift tranny. The engine ID plate seems blank. It looks a lot like my J15, but the exhaust manifold is different, and the generator too. Also Transmission shift area looks different from my J series. Anyone have any ideas what engine it is? Thanks.
  5. not sure if this has been posted here yet. I am in Ferndale and can help get parts for folks if this guy still has the car. Can't imagine he sold too many parts with the Datson title. http://bellingham.craigslist.org/pts/3490311822.html
  6. I have been told that MGB B-series heads will bolt right on the J-series block. The MGB is an 1800cc motor. You can get parts and new heads from Moss Motors, or Victoria British Limited. Probably find old used Datsun stuff cheaper. But not always available.
  7. I put an internally regulated alt on my 69 J13 and I only had to hook up a couple wires. I think the new alt just had a black and a green wire off the back, as well as a post to attach a larger sized wire to the battery. The green and the black wires on mine just turn on the light on the dash, but if they were not hooked up the bat would still charge, i think. I hooked them up to the plug that used to plug into the voltage regulator, can't remember which wires though, have to check tomorrow in the daylight. Works fine. The gas and temp didn't work on my truck either, it was a small regulator on the back of the instrument cluster, up kind of high behind the cluster. Nissan still had the part available a couple years ago. Can probably post a pic and maybe a part number tomorrow if you want. Alan
  8. Hello guys, I replaced the rear main seal on my J15 several years ago and the old Datsun just drips a little in the driveway, and I think it is from the front of the block. I tried using an MGB 1800 rear seal, but it was too thin if I remember right. I ended up using the rope seal from the kit and the directions from someone on the "old forum." I can't remember who it was but their advice was to trim the seal so it was just a little proud of the engine block and use some gasket sealer on the trimmed edges before bolting down the bearing caps. I am thrilled that my old truck leaks less than my other cars now. Also look for manuals at used book sellers. I found one by Clymer, and one from Chilton's "number 5660." The chilton's book had all the tork specs and tune up specs that I needed, I think. If I didn't tork something right it has at least lasted 6 years or so of limited use. Good luck
  9. I added basic pin switches (alarm hood pins) to the upper part of the door jambs on my truck. I ran them to a relay to trigger under dash lights, and an alarm. Works great. Can take some photos tommorrow if you want.
  10. I opened all the doors and fuel door to check for little bee nests. Found one in the drivers door jamb. The paper wasps are getting an early start this year. The 521 sat in a blackberry field for several years and I am constantly finding bee nests in it. I keep a can of bee spray in the truck with me, and have used it on several occasions while driving down the road.
  11. Installed 12volt audio and security for 8 years, then unemployed for a few months. Now learning to cut meat at a local grocery store. Pretty different jobs, and none of the tools I bought swap over to the new job. Time to invest in my future again.

Hello, I am not 100% positive of most of the stuff that I do, but I will offer what ever help I can. On the pic of the alt that you want to use I only see two wires, yellow & green. Does it have a built in voltage regulator? I replaced my alternator with a newer one that a friend gave me. I don't know what it came from, but I think he told me it was a forklift. The alt has a built in voltage regulator, so I took the old Datsun one out. I ran the two wires (yellow & green) to the old regulator harness and plugged them into the two wires (white/red & black?)that control the ignition light on the dash. I can't remember if it matters which wires I hooked them to, but I don't think so. It just closes the circuit or something like that, and makes the light on the dash come on when the truck isn't running and the ign is on. I suppose it will also turn the light on when the truck IS running but not charging above 12volts. I haven't really checked into that yet. Anyway, here are some pics. If you want any pics of anything please let me know. I will try to get them for you. Alan
  13. Well, i have never done it, but the machinist where I took my engine told me that an MGB head would bolt on to the J-series block. He said you would have to grind some metal off of the head below the thermostat for some clearance issue. I don't have any MGB stuff to compare it too, but I do have an MG Midget with the british A-series motor, and it is smaller than the J-series japanese stuff. The A-series was practically bored out to its limits for the 1295cc version in the Midget. The J-series was based off of the British B-series (or something real close to it) I think. The J-series was eventually bored out to at least a J16, and maybe bigger? I know the B-series was taken out to at least 1800cc in the MGB. The NAPA guy said that the j-series was an austin clone. I tried using an MGB rear main seal on my J15 and it was a little too small. It didn't fill in the rope channel as well as I hoped it would. I ended up using the J15 seal.
