My understanding was that it's actually not the internals that are problematic, but the case itself. If you haven't already, I would recommend checking out the GTIR Owners Club and the GTIR Modifiers Club. There's also Canada GTIR for something a little closer to home.
After my Pulsar got wrecked, I had fantasized about doing something like this - of course nothing every came of it...Awesome build, but be careful with that transmission (the gearbox is made of chocolate).
