  1. Hey Guys, Just got my Z close to driving phase but just found out my gas tank is faulty and apparently cant be resolved I need a fuel tank fast.   2. Okay here is the scoop on what I need done, I have both a 78 and a 76 Datsun 280z. My 78 I have had for almost 3 years and it runs like a dream for the most part. However the body is not in that great a shape, it is heavily rusted out and will require over $3000 in bodywork. In an effort to save money and time I purchased a 76 280z with a much better body and little rust. However this Z does not run, the guy I bought it from was a merchant marine and left it sitting for over 3 years while he was out to sea. He did spend a lot of money having the engine bored out to a 3.0 and having the transmission rebuilt. He was the second owner of the vehicle and his mother was the first. Soooo initially I had planned to pull my motor out and just swap it with his, but he begged me not to get rid of the motor he had, said it was something relatively small that needed to be fixed but that his motor was solid. Seeing how he had his bored up I would like to see if I cant get it running. I have some after market parts on my 78 including headers exhaust and a few other components, so basically I either want to get the motor running in the 76 and add my parts to it so I can sell the 78 shell or if that is not possible I want to swap the motors out completely. I do not have a ton of money but I am looking to get this done asap so I can drive my love again. Let me know what you think or if this is something you guys can handle.

  4. Hey guys thanks for all of your comments. I only have one more issue I need to solve. I found out that the headers on my Z are aftermarket and are missing the serial #s required for smog. Does anyone have aftermarket headers that have the numbers on them so I can at least give them to the technician @ the smog shop that is all he needs for the paperwork. I have a 1978 280z, if anyone has aftermarket headers that are compatible with this year please give me a shout so Im not out here riding around with no registration! Thanks again!
  5. Hey guys just took my 78 280 to the shop. They said I need to change the Head temp sensor and subharness. Is this easy to do? Where is it located? I would appreciate any help. If I could do it myself it will lower the cost I have to pay to shop. Thanks in advance!

  7. Well I figure changing the AFM and the coolant temp sensor should do it... Can someone tell me where that is on this engine and also how I can adjust the idle up a little so its closer to 1k RPM? Its registered til Dec. so I have some time to work the issues out but Id rather get her purring right now so I can start the body work issues. No luck on a rear hatch for sale yet?

  9. Whats up guys long time no chat! Well I just got my 1978 280Z yesterday off a young asian fellow in Los Angeles this thing is a beauty got a lot of rust some pretty bad as you will see but I definitely got over! This thing runs like a dream! Seller said its running rich constantly (think its cause of the AFM) :huh: But its not putting out any smoke. Idling kinda rough on start up and after it stays under 1K. On the freeway it hauls ass! Not sure what all has been done but from what I can see its just filter and Cat Back exhaust! I do have some heavy cancer in the rear end that needs to be cut out, and replaced as well as the rear hatch! IF ANYONE HAS A REAR HATCH THATS IN GOOD SHAPE PLEASE LET ME KNOW I NEED ONE ASAP!!! Also I need a right rear lock mechanism the part that actually latches. The previous owner did some shady patch jobs so it needs some body work but for $1000 you cant beat it! YES $1000 :blink: Here are some pics to get you started I'll post some videos when I get a chance. If anyone has any ideals about the Rich condition besides the AFM that would be appreciated too!   10. I dont think its the valve seals Mike. The motor was just rebuilt it only has about 600 miles on it, and it was not turboed after the rebuild. So I doubt the problem is internal the turbo came off an old 300zx and wasnt checked out before it was placed on the motor. Im going to try this change first, if it fixes the problem great! If it doesnt at least I will have a new part I can trust instead of an old used one! :D
  11. I figured that too, just wanted to get an ideal on what trims are safe to use my understanding was the compressor trim was not as important as the turbine trim. Mine is .63 so I was wondering can I go with a 70 trim on the compressor side or should I just stay close to the original? As for the smoke there is oil in the exhaust manifold as well. Not sure if the rings are blown but the motor was just rebuilt before I purchased it, so I doubt thats it. The smoke is not constant its only when I give it gas or right on start-up when idling there is no smoke. When I pulled the turbo completely apart there was a good amount of oil leaking thru on the turbine side. So I think it best to replace it now. Turboing a car is not the easiest thing to understand :huh:
  12. Hey guys I got a tip that my turbo seals might be blown hence the white smoke upon acceleration. I took apart my AIRESEARCH turbo this is what I found! I think it is a T28 its pretty small but it has a T3 flange the housing says AR 63 Compressor: Inducer: 47.6 mm Exducer: 60.3 mm Turbine: Inducer: 57.2 mm Exducer: 44.5 mm There was quite a bit of oil in the compressor housing? I dont think its suppose to be there correct? There was oil in the Turbine side too as well as in the exhaust manifold and the down pipe! Not to mention the blades on the turbine were chipped! I want to replace the turbo with a new unit. I did some reading on Garrett about Trim and Housing sizes. I saw these on ebay can someone tell me if one of these would work. I am not sure if I should stay close to original numbers or go larger!   15. Hang in there bro no matter what she still is your mother and your still her son...that will never change! As far as the $ I am sure she has spent way more than $2500 raising you! So be the bigger MAN since you are 17 and let her feel like you are complying with the rules! The datsun u can get back or buy another one!
