  1. Check mine, just posted... 1969 Datsun L521 Needs J-series short block - Make offer - Los Angeles, CA - Datsuns For Sale / Wanted - Ratsun Forums
  2. This one had the J-series engine and a 1 ton payload. Clean body, no rust. Currently garaged. I took it apart to restore and well you know the story... I bought it not running and the machinist said that it was probably oil starved because the engine siezed and the crank was bent. We junked the short block, but I still have the head. I kept and labeled all other parts. The exhaust was cut when removed. I also had a shaved door and electric window kit I was planning to use, and am willing to sell those as part of the deal as well. The title is clean and it's currently registered as non op. I'm sad to let it go but I need to focus on other projects and the driveway is too full. Asking $1500 OBO. Here are photos of the tear down. https://picasaweb.google.com/103012378153757773359/1969DatsunL521PickupTeardown1?authuser=0&feat=directlink
  3. Man that suckers low Beebani! Nice work. OK, I got it, thanks for the handholding. Newb out
  4. The brackets look really flimsy on the kit. Think they're aluminum?
  5. Anyone checked this disc brake kit out? Funny that he says this is not intended for on road use. What!?!? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-521-620-Truck-New-Front-Disc-Brake-Conversion-Set-Kit-Stainless-Hoses-/400302462914?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d33e2d7c2&vxp=mtr#ht_2284wt_1026 Any comments on a rack and pinion upgrade? I seem to be reading that the most difficult thing is finding the room or place to mount it. Any other pitfalls you have to watch out for?
  6. Now why did they have to go and change the front case design? Thanks for the info. That helps. So, does it follow, if they are the same model trans, that the clutch kit is the same for both as well? As to what engine I'm using, I haven't settled on anything. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of the options. It seems that it's much easier to find parts for the L16 drivetrains (much more common?) and if that would fit just as well, then maybe that is the way to go. I see your point about mount fab though. Are J series engines hard to come by these days?
  7. I can't remember now, but I believe that the transmission was changed when they went to the L series engine. My L521 pickup had the J series engine, however, the engine was busted when I bought it. So...I'm wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to a different transmission if I'm going to change out the motor anyway. I'm definitely not a purist who runs everything stock. So wondering if the J transmission is a good design, reliable and worth keeping or if I should take this opportunity to ditch that drivetrain altogether and go with another. The other consideration is parts. I have been unable to find a clutch kit for the J series transmission. But I found one for the L series. Just curious to hear what my options are. I guess the options are kind of limitless but I'm hoping to find one that doesn't require cutting the body and it would be especially nice if the L series trans fit into the existing mounts. But that would be asking too much. Also, does anyone know the rated torque on these stock transmissions?
  8. I think I have 5K for everything! hahaha. Actually I got quoted $2400 for a narrowed Mustang II front end Stage IV setup like this: http://fatmanfab.com/stages.php I also found this rear end IRS setup here: http://www.scottshotrods.com/indrearsus.asp
  9. That's what I figured. Anyway, it kinda sounds like the people over at Fatman will pretty much do anything custom. Does anyone recommend this place?
  10. Where should I be looking for kits to convert the front to disc brakes, rack and pinion, with air bags. I was checking out some of those hub to hub Mustang II kits, but they're about 8 inches too wide. But maybe modding one of those is easier and cheaper than the available Datsun kits. Can anyone chime in who's looked into it or done it? This is for a 1969 L521 pickup, 1 ton version.
  11. We're doing an "expansion" steam engine. We can practically get 20-30%. Also, planning to run on propane (electric eventually). Since I'm doing all stock, I'm thinking of grabbing a Toyota 22R drivetrain. I hear they can take the extra torque that I will get with steam. I'll give updates as the project goes along. Yes, it's somewhat a science experiment, but we have a working prototype on an air compressor engine. Should work. We'll see.
  12. I actually posted some help topics, but thought I'd introduce this L521 in a separate thread. https://picasaweb.google.com/naiche22/1969DatsunL521PickupTeardown1# https://picasaweb.google.com/naiche22/1969DatsunL521PickupTeardown2# Found this one on ebay a couple years back. No rust damage, very clean body. Pretty sure it's the 1 ton L521, it had a J13 engine. Been a slow project so far. At the beginning, I was ambitious about a complete teardown and restore, but now I'm just anxious to get it on the road. The plan is to convert the engine to steam and run this as a steam hybrid, mostly likely on propane & electric. I'm working with a steam guy to put a new head and manifold on the block that will essentially double the torque/hp of the motor. The engine was seized when I got the truck, couldn't break it, so I took it down to the machinist a couple weeks back. Just heard from him today that it had spun bearings, which is why it was seized and as a result, the crank would need to be cut and rewelded. So, I'm planning to find another engine/tranny combo to put in its place. Any suggestions? Needs to be 4 cylinder, that's all. This really is a great community from what I've been seeing. Good stuff here.
