#1557846 Headliner / glass / dash install order

Posted by hobbes_the_cat on 13 April 2018 - 05:47 PM

Ok so I’m not finished with the headliner but I have it clamped in place.
I kept having trouble with the bows staying up right. The more I looked at other people’s pics I realized the bows are supposed to have washers on the ends. Once I installed those it added just enough tension to keep all but one of the bows up right. The front bow I ended up making a tie wire to hook it the the roof frame and that’s keeping it where it needs to be. I think I got it now! Just need some more heat, stretching and glue to finish up.
Thanks for all the tips guys.

Well I spoke too soon, they all fit and hold tension fine when the back is not hooked into the channel but when the back is hooked in the front two bows can’t stay upright. Maybe it needs to be hotter so I can stretch it more...

Thanks Freak, you mentioned tension and there was zero tension in any of the bows, all were loose. I was putting them in the lower holes and they needed to be in the upper holes. All good now! Holding perfectly.

#1551527 Potentially buying my first 510, could use some advice

^^^ these guys bring up good points but I think 2k for a one owner car that isn’t hacked to death ain’t bad in my opinion. It’s next to impossible to find rust free or even low rust dimes in that price range these days. Plan rust repair in the budget. 5-speed swaps aren’t too hard for an average gearhead.
I do agree on prodding the vinyl top to hunt for hidden rust but you may be surprised. Vinyl is not a guarantee of rust underneath but it does raise the odds.

Ok so I bought a headliner and started installing it. The previous owner labeled the bows so I’m pretty sure I got them in the right order. Problem is I can’t get them to stay up right, they keep spinning and drooping down even when I put tension on the headliner. Is there some sort of clip or wire to keep them upright that maybe the PO lost?
Also there is a cluster 3 holes in a triangle shape that the bows hang from on each side, is there a specific one of the 3 holes to use?

Thanks for the tips guys.
DatsunFreak: yes I'll probably be going the ebay route. Looks like the best priced option.
Fivetenguy: yeah I'm happy with the color. It's code 817 "dark yellow" or "cream sand" depending on what chart you look at. My paint guy friend mixed a perfect match. The SSR's are staggered 15" and I think they'll rub on the back but we'll see. Came with the car and I haven't measured them yet.
DanielC: I'm not to concerned about firing the engine but the steering column bolts to the dash so having the dash installed will help a bunch with rolling it around.

Yeah I don't need more work. Now I need to round up a headliner!

It's a 69 dash. That's what I figured was the case but I wanted to check with someone that's done it before.
Was hoping to put the dash in before the glass but I may just hold off...

Just finished painting my goon!!!
I need some advice from ones who have taken a 510 down this far.
Obviously the headliner needs to go in before the windshield but will it cause me much problems if I install the dash before the windshield? I'd like to get the dash back in so I can move it under its own power but not if it'll make my window install a huge pain.
Anyone installed the windshield with or without the dash installed?

#1546454 Well, now what am I gonna do with this?

Posted by hobbes_the_cat on 17 February 2018 - 07:52 AM

Oh really? I tried it on a late 70's Datsun 620 and it worked good. Maybe try shorter burn time? Maybe the factory paint was a different formula from early to late 70's?

Oven cleaner worked great for me to remove spray paint but save the factory stuff underneath. Let it sit for about 10-20 min. then hose it off with water.

The window frame on front wagon doors are a fraction of an inch taller than front sedan doors.
So close that the doors will usually fit on either but it is noticeable where the front and back frames meet and looks funky if you use the wrong one. Probably won't seal water out either.

Same free Datsun ad. This time in Portland. Must be a scam.
