  1. I do not have a gauge for anything besides temp. And speed, I have an oil pressure gauge that came with the truck but I havnt tackled installing it yet
  2. You guys are awesome, seriously. I drove it around the day after the night i had the issue, and it was going normal and smooth for a while, then is started bucking slightly , but it would stop when I really gassed it. The little bucking persisted, however it was nowhere as bad as the other night, and the truck did not shutoff at any point. I also have had no problem starting it at all, and the smell has not come back at all. I checked the distributor coil and wiring. It is all relatively new (motor was rebuilt about 4000 miles ago) and there is no corrosion or looseness. However there is one single wire that runs from a wiring harness behind the driver side lights to the bottom half of the distributor; that wire is very old and a little loose. I fastened it on best I could. Does the fact that I could drive normally for most of the ride before anything going wrong confirm that it is an electrical issue? I'm going to get the battery checked tomorrow regardless because it is fairly old. Also, who wants to provide a brief tutorial on 620 carburetor adjustment?
  3. Hey all, This is a pretty difficult issue to describe adequately through written text but I'm going to give it a go and see what ya'll think So I've been using my 620 pretty frequently recently. I deliver pizzas as a side gig while I'm in grad school and I normally use my primary vehicle but last night I thought fuck it lets see if the Datsun can handle it! I took about 12 deliveries all over town, probably put about 50 to 70 miles within a few hours. Starting and stopping the engine all night like a mad man. And I must say, the old bag did very well. Didn't give me a single issue, and I made like 100 bucks for night.I was incredibly proud of the trucks performance to say the least. Tonight, though, I was driving my friend home, first time I drove the truck all day, and it was kind of bucking, or lurching forward while driving in first through third gears. Then i tried to start into first on a hill, and the truck stalled out on me and wouldn't start back up. I let it roll backwards in neutral down the hill into a parking lot. There was an overwhelming smell of something burning, almost like burnt rubber. I popped the hood and checked it out and there were no noticeable leaks or smoke coming from anywhere. Tried to start it again and it started right up. But the bucking persisted. Now this bucking has been happening on and off recently, but it is a minor occurrence for the most part, that does not persist. The night I did all those deliveries, for example, I had no issue whatsover. But tonight the bucking was much more violent and eventually resulted in me stalling out again at a traffic light. Tried to start it again with no luck. I pushed it through the traffic light and slid into a parking lot. I tried to get her running but there was no starting for about 15 minutes; the engine would turn but it just would keep chugging and chugging without firing on. I decided to try one more time before leaving her in the parking lot and it started right up. But, again, this bucking is still persists, especially if i'm not hitting the gas hard. And i can only assume I'm going to stall out again at another traffic light or stop sign or something So my first thought is, obviously, my tranny is slipping and its either because its blown out or possibly my clutch is bad which would explain the smell? However, my mechanical skills/knowledge is quite limited, so I'm hoping the pros can guide me in the right direction. Is there a list of things I should check before bringing it into a transmission shop? If it is the clutch (which makes sense to me because all the gears had this bucking problem) why the stalling? and why the inability to start again? As always, i appreciate any assistance yall provide.
  4. I like this idea very much. I can't imagine that I need more than 1/32 of an inch off of that edge.
  5. Hey yall, I recently changed the drums and shoes on my truck and I've run into a problem. The new drums have a bit of a sharper corner on them, as opposed to the old ones that have a more rounded edge. (see photos) This prevents the rear wheels from sitting flush against the drums and I'm worried could eventually cause a wobble or tire loss. You can see where the rim is digging into the drum in the third photo. Has anyone run into this problem before? Oreillys only offers this one kind of drum for the 620, I havn't checked autozone but I figured Id run into the same problem. I've taken them to a couple machine shops to see if they could mill the edge down a tad but no one feels comfortable working on drums like that. One guy suggested looking into spacers of some kind, anyone know anything that might work? I do not want to put money into new rims right now, but I fear that might be my only option.
  6. Supplemental Question! When replacing the gear shifter bushing to clean up the sloppiness, can I get to it without dropping the tranny? I havn't dug into it at all yet so I figured I'd ask yall.
  7. Looking at it, I thought I could unbolt the pitman arm and, if necessary, unbolt the entire steering box from the steering column and the frame to get into it. Are you saying I only need to unbolt the pitman arm to get at the sector shaft seal?
  8. Hey all, So here is what I'm looking at in terms of mechanical issues on my 620. Would it be wise to tighten the valve cover and see if that stops the leak? or should I just change the gasket? As for the differential and steering leaks, would repairs be possible or should I just replace them? Let me know what you guys think!
  9. That electric steering assist is a trip, its seriously expensive though. I don't need power steering on the truck, but I'd like to make it easier to drive for my girlfriend. I also think it would up the value quite a bit I appreciate the welcome! Where can I find information on the Williams show in october?
  10. Hey yall, I recently bought myself a 1979 620. Its my first pickup and my first project. I will be posting pictures ASAP, but I wanted to start off with some info and some questions. I paid $1200 for this truck because it has a rebuilt L20B motor in it with about 3,000 miles, and a carb rebuilt about 2 years ago. But cosmetically, the truck is in deplorable shape (which is the exact reason why I fell in love with it). Basically: The windshield is siliconed in (crappily, I might add. If you're going to install a windshield wrong, you should at least try and do it wrong well.); the driver-side window regulator is shot; driver door is missing the door panel, but both of the doors are kind of shot because of cracks in sheet metal where the mirrors hang, also, the passenger side mirror is missing and judging by the condition of the door, I probably couldn't hang a mirror on it anyway; the wipers worked the day I bought it, but since have stopped, and the wiper fluid does not spray; the floors are rusted through on both sides, though someone hap-hazardly welded a new piece of metal on the driver's side; the rear axel has a slight leak, no drip, but a build up of fluid on the axle; could use 4 new tires; steering grease leaks out of the bottom of the column; the valve cover gasket seems to be leaking as well (which is suspicious to me considering the recent rebuild); the bench seat is basically garbage and has only the front two bolts holding it to the car; in order to beep the horn, I have to ground a wire against the bare metal of the steering column. The parking brake seems like it is coated in rust and needs to be adjusted if not just replaced. The list goes on. This truck is the most beautiful vehicle I have ever called my own. I stumbled upon this forum and have been browsing around all the discussions learning new things. I'm really looking forward to restoring this Datsun, and I'm grateful for all knowledge shared! To start off, I want to ask about interchangeability between Nissan and Datsun pickups throughout the 70s and 80s. I'm looking to salvage two doors and a bench seat, and I'm wondering what trucks to look for. Also, are there any trucks from the 80s that have power steering systems that would fit in the 79 Datsun? What about the rear axle? A few other questions: What does it mean when the gear shifter has a lot of wobble to it, and how can I adjust this? Are there any good sites for Datsun parts? How big can I go with new tires?
