#1519230 Just bought a 521

Smaller is better with these trucks.  I wouldn't do anything bigger than 15".

I didn't read all of this but did you do all the work (within reason) yourself on this truck?

Lol just got off the phone with roadsterwerx before checking back here. They can order glass and seals for the 521

Yeah you can order them too from pilkington or arizona classics or any other glass vendor.

Got it back..not sure how people repair these things but it looks like the bent the fins in the corners to solder the leaks.  They spray painted the entire thing (well most of it), drain hose, pet cock and all.

Probably shouldn't asked them to paint it but won't even be able to tell once its installed...or I just go over it again myself.

At this point as long as it doesn't leak I am cool with it.

i had a 3 core stock style copper radiator with a healthy built L20b and couldnt keep it under 195

I replaced with an aluminum koyo and duel electric fans  WISH I DID IT YEARS AGO

now it stays just under 180 on the freeway and fans never turn on till in traffic and it might get to 185 on a hot day

i wanted the stock look but it wasn't enough radiator just my 2 cents

Cool that helps.

But all I got is the stock temperature gauge so no idea what temperature mine gets to.  I do know that on a warm day it usually settles to the right of the break in the temp gauge.

I can always buy a koyo down the road if need be to.  But for now I just wanted to stop the leak.

Hey, now you know where I'm coming from in my thread. Maybe I should upgrade my wiring

Yeah I know it...but still no better wealth of knowledge on old Datsuns than this place.

2 leaks in the corner, they can repair it for $80 and throw in a washer.

Should be done tomorrow.

You did not try to replace the o ring?

Nope..wasn't going to go through having to put it back in, have it leak again and have to pull it out again.

Decided while it was out to have it checked ($20) and go from there.

Bounce would indicate bad shocks.  New theory lower vehicle instead of replacing bad shocks!  LOL

This place never ceases to amaze me...must be the median age or something.

FWIW old man river the truck was lowered and thus riding on the bump stops which didn't allow the shock to travel.  I cut them to allow the relatively new KYB gas shocks to alleviate that.

I'll be doing this pretty soon. What did you cut the rubber with?

Sawzall and drywall knife.  Its a bitch with them on the truck but I couldn't break one of the mounting nuts/bolts loose so I had no choice.

Didn't touch the fronts.  Truck has a lot less bounce and a better ride overall.

#1518177 Advice for evaluating L20b...or any used engine?

Posted by d.p on 19 September 2017 - 06:46 AM

Well d.p, I'm kinda thinking "leaps of faith" might be akin to cats supposedly having 9 lives. I just took a big leap of faith buying my 521 & driving it 4 long hours in the dark after doing a minimal inspection/test drive. That trip alone had to be worth at least 8 of those 9

We'll see. Afterall, the leap of faith I took buying a stored L16 with A87 peanut head & attached 5speed from a guy several years ago paid off very sweetly. Put that in my wagon & she's still purring. Best $200 I've spent in a long time.

Well you should already have your answer then.

Dropped it off today to have it looked at.  Old school radiator repair shop and probably 1 of 1 anywhere close to me.

I'll swap the coil sometime soon and see what happens. Just want to enjoy the truck for now.
