  1. RacerX - if and when that happens - i'll be sure to let you know. Dolomite - Thanks for the suggestion - i'll definitely look into it. im a big fan of very little maintenance. the less I do - the better for me...and the car. lol but ya - these sound pretty awesome. thanks for you suggestion - if I do end finding and going with these, i'll let you know what I think of them. Thanks again.
  2. Banzai510 - Thanks for the info and suggestions. The 510 is in pretty good shape and runs decent as is. Hopefully you're hitting that 5th gear on the highways/freeways. I wouldn't really know where I could get a spare drive shaft. Datsun 510's are definitely not a common car in Ontario. i'll poke around though and keeping an eye out. As for the tranny - ya - I thought of that too. They guy might not know much - but I did ask this one "Nissan/Datsun" garage if they could do it - they said they'll look into it - but never got back to me or returned my messages. oh well. also - is it forbidden to swap out the original radio? im pretty sure the one I have is dead..
  3. Banzai510 - ya - installing a tranny is not my forte - I'd rather have someone do it right the first time rather than me jam it in miss something. The car runs no problem. Currently running a downdraft carb with a 4spd tranny. the tranny I have waiting to be installed is a 5spd off a '77 280z car. Im in no rush to have everything done for the car - but I would like to be able to take it on the highway without it screaming like it currently does. DatsunMike - thanks for the heads up on the R1 cable and what would need to be removed from the 510. Jesse - Thanks for the suggestion on the Weber 32/36 - maybe when I fail to secure some other carbs - i'll just go with that. or maybe i'll just get that for now till I find some decent side draft carbs. RacerX - ya - I think that's the sense I got from reading these posts. granted im fairly green in the Datsun world I have worked cars/bikes/heavy equipment before. but - ya - I'd rather be cautious than sorry and broke. we'll see. if anyone knows anyone in the Toronto area - or knows a member here that's from around this city - please let me know who they are - I'd really like to get this tranny installed. Thanks for the all info everyone! :)
  4. Also, I'd probably need advice on the linkage replacement if I go with the bike carbs
  5. DatsunMike - thanks for the link. That was a good read. Pictures didn't load for me though :( but that's fine. I found a set for a low price, off a '99, would that do? The seller for the solex carbs is looking to get 600 dollars for his set. A bit high with no manifold to come with them.
  6. RacerX, the tranny is off a '77 280z.
  7. Sorry, another dumb question. The bike carbs: - is there a specific brand that is best or any bike would be good? - should they come off a bike that's at least 1000cc? - does the year of the bike play a factor? - these should come with a fuel line, right?? Or do I need to fabricate one? I know... What a noob. I'm learning guys. Or at least trying too. Thanks for any answers provided
  8. RacerX (awesome nod to speed racer), JesseC, BananaHamuck, Banzai510, Loungin112 and DatsunMike thanks for the heads up on all this awesome info. I'm blown away by the support. Paradime wow, it didn't even cross my mind that you could possibly have bike carbs as an option. Speechless. Definitely will consider this as an option. And of course DatsunMike would have a setup like this already. Top notch. So the manifold is the key here. If the seller doesn't have the manifold or has one that was for an L16, would it fit on the L20b? I know the seems like a stupid question, but this is my first 510 and carb'd car. And I've read some posts where loads of parts from the L series motors are interchangeable. I see Weber 32/34 mentioned a couple of times, but I'm assuming that's for down draft setup? If the seller does not have the manifold, would it be hard to track one down?? Using BananaHamuck's ruler method would be a safe move regardless? DatsunMike - the adapter you mentioned, would that be compatible with these carbs? Is it expensive? And the manifold you fabricated, how did you know what length to make them? Did that play a factor? Your manifold looks longer than those posted by Paradime. Also, would you recommend bike carbs as a cheaper solution? Or is fabricating a manifold offset the savings one would make with purchasing carbs? RacerX - the ones this seller has are side draft (I'm pretty sure you knew that already) and I think I want to go with that look, well because I like it better than the down draft setup. Lol is there a higher level of maintenance for side draft carbs over down draft? Sorry for the questions. Also, anyone from the Canadian Ontario region, specifically Toronto, know of a place that could: - shorten a drive shaft - install a 5spd tranny I know the last question is off topic, but I thought I'd ask since you guys were helpful with my initial post. Thanks again for your help guys.
  9. HI All - so before I get destroyed by the Ratsun family for starting this topic - let me say I did conduct a search and maybe I didn't do it so right - but I couldn't find the information I required regarding compatible carbs for a L20b motor on a 510. I have access to picking up a set of Solex C40 DDH Carbs. my issue is - when ever I look up any info regarding them - they only say "Alfa Romeos" but I've had a couple of people tell me that they are compatible with the l20b motor. im skeptical. I've found that the Solex C40 ADDHE are compatible with the L16-L20 motors but no mention about the Solex C40 DDH. would the infinite ratsun family and their wisdom be able to tell me if this particular Carb is actually compatible with my motor or should I tell this guy that he'll need to adjust his ad?? even pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as any help would be. please and thanks :)
  10. Hi everyone - thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. Banzai510 - Awesome. I'll definitely try to find out if this guy is around and if he can help me out. DanielC - Im limited with the knowledge of what I can and can't do with which types of trannies on an L20b motor. but its good to know that there a lot of options available. my understanding is that there are some specific transmissions that would bolt on with very simple modifications and others that require shaft shortening. But i'll look into what you've suggested. I also do a lot of driving on highways (or freeways) so I was aiming at trying to smooth out the drive a bit by adding the 5pd. Flatcat19 - Ya. I've heard a few people say the same thing. But like I mentioned to DanielC, since I do a lot of driving on highways, the 5th gear would come in handy. but I hear what you're saying. Banzai510 - I've taken her out a couple of times. maybe its something I need to get used too? I've only driven cars that have had 5+ gears. so 4 is sorta a step back for me. but maybe I just need to give a little more time to the adjustment period? i duno. i guess that could be last option. I'd like to try the 5 spd first. Charlie69 - Toronto is a pretty flat city. however, if it were full of peaks and valleys, than ya, probably a 4 spd tranny would make more sense like you say. I'd also save some coin too rather than do this swap. unfortunately, that's not the case. but thanks for the idea. LenRobertson - Thanks man. Ya. DatzenMike also suggested the same thing and I've recently downloaded the info. i just haven't had a chance to look it over yet. however, i feel like although it will probably give me a wealth of knowledge on various options available to me, living in Toronto will severely limit me with whats available. Also thanks for the tip regarding the sleeve and the TO bearing. i'll have to keep that in mind. *making notes* Dolomite - I've tried the wrecking yard route. most places look at me like im crazy or get a good laugh when i say "Datsun". its like im speaking a different language. Problem with older cars like that and Canadian winters, they don't last long. The amount of salt this city throws on the streets is obscene. Cars rust out like theres no tomorrow. But ya, since the motor is an L20b, i imagine it would smooth out the ride with the overdrive gear. But thanks for the suggestion, we were on the same train of thought. seriously - thanks everyone. This Ratsun Community is nothing short of amazing. if anyone else has additional info - by all means, let me know. im still learning as im new to the Datsun 510 world, but excited to be a part of it.
  11. Thanks Charlie69. I will definitely do that. much appreciated for the pointer.
  12. Hi Ratsun Family - Im a new member and was looking for some help. I currently own a 72' 510 with an L20B motor. My only issue is its 4 spd tranny. I was hoping I could put a 5 spd and take her on the highway. I've read threads where some people say its fine to take her on the highway even with 4 spds but your fuel mileage will be pretty bad. Well that's one major reason I want a 5 spd and the fact it would a bit less noise on the highway. Before I get booed or sarcastic remarks about trying the "search" function on this site, I've tried. I've found lots of guys that seem to have transmissions for sale however, they are located all around the US. I am from Canada (Toronto, Ontario). I was hoping that maybe some of, if not one or two, members may be from a city near by that is willing to sell me a transmission. I'd be happy with one from the states provided the price isn't crazy (our dollar is weak compared to the American dollar) and shipping costs aren't high. I know - im asking a lot. But I assure you, I've tried everything else.. eBay, Craig's list, Kijiji, autowreckers and mechanic shops. Most guys roll their eyes once I bring up the age of the transmission im looking for. so basically I turned to the experts after exhausting my other options. I'd post a pic of the old girl but I have her wrapped under a tarp to protect her from the weather elements. She's navy blue (I doubt that's the original colour) rolling on what look to be her original rims. she starts with ease and has no functioning radio - but then again who listens to the radio in great sounding cars like these? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
  13. Hey Guys. Like 510Goonies, I'm new to the site and the new owner of a 72' 510. Although I feel like I've overpaid, she's worth it. I'm looking to swap out the 4 speed for a dogleg. The motor surprisingly is an L20B. I've read that 77'-79' 200sx is my best bet. This site has loads of info and I'm grateful for it. My only issue, I can't find a transmission. Unfortunately, the real kicker is, I live in Canada. And not on the west coast. So I'm pretty limited with resources up here. I've talked to a few mechanics and used parts guys, they basically laugh when I bring up anything older than an 80' Any help or guidance in my quest for the dogleg would be greatly appreciative Thanks in advance
