I also have an 81 KC 4x4. Looking for synchro for 5th and slider and hub - so Im told. Tranny was slipping out of 5th. Bucking in first despite high RPM. And on and off dying while idling. Friend at a shop is looking for the parts now. Its been a week and a half. Thanks to all of you for valuable information, pictures etc.

It looks like a piece of magazine with a zip tie wrapped around it. Is that a fill plug ? Its leaking transmission oil I believe.

Thanks everyone. All information is much appreciated. Look forward to getting into it. For the record I think the paint job is hilarious and fitting. Definitely leaving it, for now. End goal is apocalyptic war machine. I hear these trucks basically came out of Tennesee with rust. Any backyard Macgyver band aid solutions? Not caring much is where Im at currently. Its all body, but pervasive. I will likely patch it all up eventually. Its coming out to Burning Man where I work for a couple months and will likely end up with shit welded to it, armor, spikes, roof hatch, cattle catcher? etc. We'll see. Hopefully.

It is a 5 speed. I can get it into fifth but have to hold it there. Otherwise it forces itself out of gear into neutral . It also leaks gear oil and transmission fluid I believe. So I anticipate having the whole tranny rebuilt / replaced. Going to dig deeper tomorrow just wanted to know if this is common or what, will update with further information. Thanks

Hey all, new member, first post. Bought a 1981 720 4x4 yesterday. I want to upload pictures, and have a few questions. Where is the image upload function? I can't seem to find it. Here is the link to the craigslist ad. Isn't she pretty? http://reno.craigslist.org/cto/5407329931.html It can't hold on to 5th gear. And a bearing is dead which allows the shifter to float around, so its a game of find the gear. I don't know a hell of a lot about mechanics but I have friends and were going to keep this tetanus pile alive. Any comments appreciated. Will follow up with more specific information after I get a more concise diagnostic.
