  1. I've been able to drive the truck with the "rebuilt" tranny now installed. I have a leak where the speedo attaches to the tail shaft. I removed the cable and it seems that the "top hat" gasket is in good shape and I don't see any signs of gear oil creeping up the cable into the cab. I'm assuming that the "O" ring on the pinion was replaced with all of the other rings and seals during the rebuild. It didn't appear to be leaking from there. Rather, it looked like it was coming out of the threaded housing at the end of the cable. I noticed that inside this cup is an "O" ring. The one inside of mine looks pretty mangled. Are these typically part of the speedo cable assembly?
  2. Thanks datzenmike. Don't see anymore switches.
  3. I finally have my transmission back from the shop and was able to take a picture of the speedo cable port. An earlier reply to this post indicated that this may have a clue to definitively identifying what this 5 speed originally came out of. So here goes: Does that help?? Also, what is this sending unit on the side for? Reverse lights?
  4. I've removed the old rear main out of my L18 and inserted the new one. I did what I could by hand and then worked it with a block of wood and a hammer. I was able to get it to a point where it doesn't feel like it wants to go any further but it is not sitting totally flush with the block. I mean it is microscopically sticking out, maybe a millimeter. I'm afraid of damaging the seal if I try to hammer on it any more but I'm not positive that it has gone in all the way. I don't imagine it has bottomed out. Could that be possible? Any advice?
  5. Yep, just didn't know if there was another quality Japanese aftermarket brand out there.
  6. I will do that. Is there a Japanese clutch kit part number that anyone can recommend that might save me a few bones?
  7. You make a good point. Does $230 sound about right then?
  8. Glad to see this topic is helping out a few folks. I have my tranny (the first one posted at the top) at the shop for cleaning, new seals, getting the flywheel turned, and replacing two worn out shift forks. Other than that I'm told everything looks good inside. They said they found a clutch for me, but they priced it at $230, which sounds a bit extreme to me. I did a search on Craigslist and lo and behold I found the following: "New pressure plate, clutch disk, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, and guide tool. This will fit a 1977-1981 Datsun 200SX, 1978-1981 Datsun 510, 1974-1977 Datsun 710." Based on the info ya'll have provided about my transmission does it sound like this would work? He only wants $50.
  9. Thanks! That's helpful. I dropped it off at a shop for them to go through. Now I can tell them what it's from. It was leaking out of every seal making a mess all over the place.
  10. Can someone please tell me what this transmission might be from? It is a five speed, but I would like to know what from so I can order some seals for it and such. Please let me know if more pics are required. Thanks! Looks like 7104989 stamped on top. The plate is stamped with "K" "7Z08" and "38." It sits at about 31" long.
  11. Well, according to what you've said it would appear that I do indeed have them backward. Thanks! Any thought on the springs? Should I keep the more robust spring (yellow) on the top? What about the rears? The bigger spring on the rear is white and I have it on bottom.
  12. I installed this side according to what I found on the driver side, but I'm afraid that the previous owner, who was a half-wit, did the last install and possibly/probably got it wrong.
  13. I need help figuring out how these shoes should be oriented. One end is tapered, and one end has two holes while the other has one. This is the passenger side. I installed these in the way that seemed right, but in researching on the forum I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere. The leading pad on (on the right) is angled higher than the trailing shoe. Does all this seem correct? Also, does the orange spring go on top or bottom? The yellow spring is a bit beefier, but I think that on the rears the stronger spring is on the bottom. Is it the same up front?
