  1. It runs. Same old issues. Still needs vent/can mod. Oil drain to pan mod, new carb, and lots of other stuff. No time to do anything. It was a stressful year, and now I have to leave. I plan to improve on what is there next year. Sorry no pics. It will have to sit outside this winter, but I will wrap it up. Thanks to all for the help. Will update when I have something new. Hey Fo0manchu, Could you explain more how the vent with vacuum line would be configured. Thanks.
  2. junkyard turbo 720 project

  3. Are there any other engines that will bolt up to the 5 speed transaxle in my 1982 Datsun 720 4x4 xtra cab?
  4. Just want to remind you that the timing was backed way, I mean way off, for that run. With that said, I now bring us to point two. Average 0-60 times in that truck were approx. 24 seconds before any engine mods were done. I own 4 of these trucks in various models, and even with a weber, after 150,000 hard miles, they just don't have the stock power anymore. Point three. I did crank the timing up an do several runs that were much more impressive. On these runs there was no way to hold my cell phone so you could see the gauges and drive at the same time. You guys are lucky I was able to film the one run I did. Point 4 I am away from that project in another state. Returning in spring, I'm trying to locate a real turbo. You know, not one I literally found in the local dump. I had a lot of fun for virtually no money, but would like to set it up right, so it's reliable. I can, and will fab any new partsrequired. Any advice on what turbo's I should look for on craigslist/, at pick n pull yards, larger scrap yards, ect. I've heard a small diesel turbo with built in blowoff, or really anything smaller with a built in relief alve, Anyone know what to look for. I am also looking for a complete z22 or 224 engine, as I may a blown a hole in a piston. I haven't even done a compression test, but it starts real hard and will blow a smoke ring every once in a while while trying to start. Dosen't look good. Time to get a spare. I need a cheap engine or truck in the Spokane/cda area, that I can ship up to my truck in Alaska. Can't afford a complete rebuild at this point. Hoping to find a good 2ndrunning engine in a wrecked truck. I am set up an can deal with hauling a totaled truck/car away. May travel to other places in pacific northwest. Need to get it done by end of week in march. Thanks
  5. http://youtube.com/watch?=pkaWXeRLFy4 video of turbo Datsun 720 pickup running Just go to youtube and search "video00671"
  6. Truck doesn't really like it with the jet removed. Loads up bad. I have a job that starts tomorrow, so no time for messing around. Be a week or two before I get back to it. I'll try and post a video of it running.
  7. Dude, the dashboard pics are from a different truck. The turbo is on my 720. Read the whole thread before you post b.s.
  8. ended up just removing the main jet for the secondaries. Ran tits for a couple test runs. Was going to do more tuning, but carb's throttle shaft is worn beyond help and so basically this stock hitachi carb is fucked. On a related note. Fuel consumption is out of control. I burned 5 gallons in a 6 hot laps around the block. I think I'm rich enough. Engine never gets hot. Carb plenum body ices up quick. Now I believe I have some sort of ignition issue as it doesn't want to rev above 4000rpm. Starts cutting out. Work more on that tomorrow. Guess I'll have to make a new plenum and try one of the multiple 4bbl carbs I have on hand. Today the ole Datsun left more rubber on the road then it's entire life's efforts combined. Love that low end torque, that pulls right up to some decent h.p. at 7000rpm. 12-13lbs boost max What a screamer. Always been a no torque turd before turbo install. Needs a muffler for sure. I'm sure my neighbors are getting tired of hearing me tearing around. My fun to dollars spent ratio is off the charts. I dare anyone to try and have more fun for the same $.

  10. Took a drive last night. Still leaking a bit of oil from the turbo oil return. Going to have to make a way to seal it for real. Sealed up the dipstick so no more quart of oil all over every time I drive it. So it seems my carbon seal has gone bad. I now get oil smoke out the exhaust when I let off the throttle. Backfire through the carb might have done it? Still messing with carb jets, ect. Going to do some more tinkering and test drive again today.
  11. Finally got my shop freed up, so I might have a chance to pull it in and do some tinkering. I've been so busy all week, haven't even started it. I'm brewing tonight, so no chance of working on dirty Datsun's. Maybe tomorrow.
  12. I should have built my header out of smaller tubing. Be nice to get the turbo to boost a bit sooner. Live and learn. Maybe for the next one eh?

  14. Today my neighbor came over and sold me a 1983 Datsun 720 4x4 5 speed xtra cab for $500. That makes 4 720 pickup's in my stables. Needs maintenance and a battery. Brand new tires worth what I paid for the whole truck. Having a hot rod Datsun parked out front has it's perks. http://s754.photobucket.com/user/busguy61/slideshow/720
