  1. Can't beat that price for a running 240z. This car isn't too bad for a car in the midwest. Good job so far and nice jig. You are welcome to come out to Connecticut and build a jig for a 510 for more practice! Hey Datzenmike, Check out the link, the tear down pics give you more of the story. Floor pans... no good, but for a car in the midwest and being Japanese, not bad at all. Again, Congrats on this score. I grew up in Michigan and my general rule of thumb is never buy a car from the northern midwest, Rot City. But this one seems pretty normal for these cars.
  2. We had on old Polaris 600 triple that did the same thing. It ran for 200 miles but developed a huge hole in the powerband. My father also had a circle track car that had a busted crank main, he ran it with no oil pressure for two weeks waiting for it to break but never did. The old 350 Chevys were tough as nails. BTW Eagle_Adam, I have a nice like new l20b crank lying around if you need one. Trade for a z22 crank?
  3. Datzenmike, I knew that you were gonna tell me this. I was doing more research last night and found some comments you made on this build. You said the same thing then. I never considered the extreme angle on the piston with that build. Thanks for the help. I was considering the z22 crank first but then the bigger must be better bug bit me again.
  4. This is the crank bearing second from the rear. Has some nice wear plus the big groove worn into it. The others were in better shape but need replacing. The high compression racing pistons I won't be using. They are Cosworths, don't mind the grease smeared all over them, I assume the previous owner wiped it on there for corrosion prevention. <a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/brianjaroniewski/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160227_201507_zpsl8ef4yfz.jpg.html" target="_blank">
  5. Thanks Dime Dave, I lost track of this a while back after I read it. I wanted to do a different engine build then and forgot about the Ben Pila write up. I remember the 4mm over bore oil burning issue and thats what makes me not want to bore it any further. Jason Grey write up states no boring and no piston modding gives 2283cc. Mostly, I am trying to figure out what piston head combo to run for a desirable compression ratio. Also, do you guys notice less ping in the engines with higher compressio on the 10% ethanol fuel out there or is this just an east coast thing?
  6. Hey datsunmike, quick question here. I was looking over the Jason Grey info and had some ideas to pass on to you for some education. I have the L20b as mentioned above, I just pulled it apart to see it has the stock crank with a set of Cosworth piston that are +0.50mm over. Not sure about the rods, if they are stock, haven't measured them. My question is that I want to run the z24 crank in this block like the 2.3 stroker, but I don't want to bore it any further than it already is. I would like to run 9:1 to 10:1 compression in the build, what piston/head combo would be best to achieve this? I need to purchase the head and would like to do the 280zx valves in it. I also am thinking of running Dual sidedraft Webers probably around the 36 cfms, this will be a weekend driver. Thanks for your input.
  7. I am excited to see this color on a 510, this is the color I want to paint my 510. I see so many of my patients driving in with this color Jeep, and no matter what light it is in, it always looks great. Awesome choice for what's already an awesome build!
  8. Did the engine run before the work, and if so, did it have the same issue? Was the base of the head milled? I'd say it could have been the head gasket failed. If thats not it, then the head or block could be bad. I've never worked with pitted heads before so I don't know if that could cause failure.
  9. I think for temporary use, I will build the 2.0 and swap the pistons for flat tops and run the open chamber head. Some day I will do a modern swap, but not until I graduate from dental school. I really want to run dual webers SOOOOO BADLY! I can already hear it in my mind.
  10. Tobym, you will be the first to know when I get them out.
  11. Thanks Datzenmike, that helps a lot. I would probably buy the U67 and flat top pistons. How do these engines like 10:1? I've had the SVT focus that was 10.2:1 and its only requirement was 91+ octane. I am willing to sacrifice some of the drivability for more hp.
  12. Your boys are super lucky. The best times in life are spent sharing acomplishments with the ones you love most. I now live 750 miles from my dad and now I realize how important that time was. Your build is super nice, great job.
  13. Had the day off after my Chemistry class so I decided to get some more work done. I started to dive into the engine currently in the car. Now, the previous owner told me this engine was locked up. As I started to dismantle it.... Lets just say, I've seen better. This is what I found. Good thing I have this guy, It's a 2.0L but I have no info on it other than it was a racing engine. I have no idea what head to run on this. Also, I assume that it will have too high compression for street use and I may need to source some different pistons. Any suggestions on what head to use? Could I use the 210 head on the L20? Decisions decisions.
  14. I am impressed with result on the right front clip. Thats an area a lot of guys woulda just covered over again. Seeing the paint completely stripped from the engine bay shows how much better it will be. I'm glad, and consider myself lucky, that my 510 has never had body damage like that, or rust. I love the V-dub flares you did, I found your build google searching steel BRE flares. I wish someone stamped replicas of the BRE's in steel. Are you deleting the heater-core on the firewall and going for the super clean look? It seems really clean and your engine set-up seemed to fit pretty well without cutting it.
