  1. I have a friend looking to sell his 1979 710 wagon with automatic transmission. He is the original owner and has only put a little over 50,000 miles on it. He's garaged it it's whole life too. Curious where abouts you think this bad boy would be worth.
  2. I was hoping the modulator valve wasn't connected as you described, but it was. I put new hose on, messed with the points a little and it's at least drivable now. Still idles pretty rough though. Looking at the vacuum modulator, it is in fact connected to the same fitting that runs to the brake booster from the intake. My intake has a second barb (not the egr, but right next to it) that I can't figure out where to connect, but saw someone had connected this to their vacuum modulator line. I currently have it capped. T it to the vacuum modulator or leave it? Sometimes this truck seems to decide randomly how it wants to run :(
  3. I have a 74 which I recently put an l16 into after the death of my l18. The engine was running fine, but I started getting a clogged idle system on my weber. It was rust in my tank- fixed now, sealed up with por-15. Now I have a new problem. The truck starts up and idles flawlessly in park or neutral. Put it in gear and the idle is rough. Sometimes it is rough overall, sometimes I can get it to run fairly well, but it stutters or misses every 5 seconds or so. Everything is tight, vacuum lines in place/blocked off, and I've tried adjusting the idle and air mixture screws all over the board with no success. Does this sound like a carb rebuild is necessary, or maybe something else?
  4. I thought it was strange that the design on this starter would prevent it from fully engaging the flexplate.
  5. The engine is an l18 still. I took a look at the starter and saw a retaining ring holding another ring on the shaft of the starter that was preventing the gear from extending far enough. I took off the ring and the problem is fixed. Starter is solid.
  6. Thanks Mike. I'll pull the starter and check to see if it's functioning tonight as well as the other things you mentioned. I'll update with my findings
  7. First of all thanks for all the help I've gotten reading this forum so far. You have gotten me running again a few times already. I purchased a 74 620 automatic about two months ago and since then I've put in a new starter among other things as the old one was worn out. In the last couple days I have found it more and more difficult to start and am just getting grinding sounds. I pulled the starter off last night and the flywheel is worn down all the way around as far as I can tell. I was wondering how far the starter should engage the flexplate (mine is only engaging about a quarter of the width of the plate). Also, would this result from something misaligned or a missing shim? I tried to post in the classifieds as well but had some issues- anybody in the Seattle area have a flexplate for an l18 they want to sell? I want to get this sweet truck back on the road and have a feeling a new flexplate is needed!
