  1. Thanks guys! I definitely want to get recovery gear and tools in order first. I never thought about a radio.. that's a good idea! I find when I'm in rocky terrain... Like mine tailing piles, one wheel spins due to an open diff. I though about putting sandbags in the bed (or something heavy) have any of you done this? Any improvement?
  2. Well, My task today was to drill out the mixture adjustment plug, and I did! Got it to idle smooth at 950 rmp. In that process I found a disconnected hose, inside diameter of 1/2 inch. On the front side of the carb, it goes from the underside of the air cleaner box, down to a valve of some sort and on to who knows where. Then I found a severely cracked end of a hose which undoubtably was sucking air. Checked the plugs, they are NGK.. actually the ones mike suggested! They have normal looking wear (new ones are on the way with ngk wires). The egr valve will be tomorrow's project! I have another smog at 11 on Monday. I feel like it is passable now though.
  3. Adjusting the screws. Adjust idle until it is at speck rpm, 800. Screw mixture in until its about to die and out until its about to die, then find the smoothest and fastest happy medium. Idle screw again to 800... repeat. HOWEVER,the idle screw is all the way backed out, so i can only get it to around 950, however, the idle speed passed at 963, so that'll be ok as far as smog goes. is there anything else I can adjust to bring it a bit lower? Thanks!
  4. Hey all, Looking for the brass plug/cap on my 82 720s carb so i can drill it out. I need to adjust the mixture screw that is hiding behind it! Sorry if this has already been answered! My patience for searching for it is running thin :)
  5. Haha! I can't say for sure if they did, but I'm doubtful. I live in a hick town, less than 4,000 people. "Above and beyond" in customer service isn't easily found. So I will check everything myself just to be sure!
  6. Will do! So even though the smog report says the egr and PVC "passed" it is still possible they are malfunctioning?
  7. Wow, mhub91, thanks for all the info! It's very interesting learning about all this. I will look into the vacuum guage and spring. How would you go about checking the egr valve?
  8. There is an idle adjustment screw on the passenger side of the carb. Where is the brass plug in relation to that? I know I could go out and find it, but its pouring rain right now haha.
  9. Alright guys, I've ordered ngk plugs and wires. Drilling out the mixture cap was suggested by the smog guys and will not fail a visual test, so that's good! I think I will drill it out and have them hook it up to the machine and adjust it... I get a free smog if they do a little work to help fix it. I will also be getting the engine and cat real hot before hand. There's a lot of variables, but it was close to passing. If I can get it to squeak by, that'll be good enough for now. I'm hoping to adjust the valves when I put a weber on it.
  10. Haha makes sense on the wires. Man, this sounds like a pig of a job to make it pass smog!
  11. And Mike, what wire set would you recommend to work with the ngk plugs best?
  12. Ok, does one coil charge the intake and another coil the exhaust? That check sounds easy enough. However, I don't know how to check the valve clearance. How do I do that? Sounds like my timing is right at 3 btdc. I have yet to go through the plugs, but I'm sure they could be replaced. I'm going to go through the wires, cap, rotors, and plugs tomorrow. What's your recommended way to clean the contact points? Thanks again for all the help!
  13. So removing he plug is a no no? The idle screw is almost all the way out.. It's around 850-900 now from what my original tach tells me. I sprayed carb cleaner along the vacuum lines and connection points, they seem to be good, no change in the idle of the engine. The timing is at 3 btdc.. Should I advance it to burn more efficiently?
  14. Ergg, darn you California! My 82 failed the test today because the hydrocarbons were at 284 idling at 963 rpm, max is 250, and average is 51. Apparently those numbers mean it is running too lean. How can I get my truck to run richer? I just need to pass smog so I can put on a weber. Already ran carb cleaner through it and have premium gas in it. Thanks all!
