  1. Out of curiousity , what do you figure the IHP would be ? I would have to estimate off the compression ratio's , There is actually a formula for thermal efficency but it is partially incorrect becuase it doesn't account for fuel vapor,
  2. Haha, thanks, I found the formula in a 1970 automotive mechanics text book from My highschool
  3. Okay guys, I am curious about the comparison here. I have been told the bore of a Z22 is 87.00 mm , going by the old school SAE formula (Bore x # of cylinders / 2.5) I get around 139hp, yet this engine was SAE 85hp rated, so I want to know if it is the formula or was there a change in measuring methods from the 70's to the 80's for SAE. Also, anyone who has access to an old SUN machine, or an Oscilloscope and a Z22 want to do some measurements for me? I would like to know the Internal horsepower (ihp) which is the average cylinder pressure at the power stroke divided by the average pressure of the other 3 strokes. Thank you for your time and resources as always guys, this forum is so great for that.
  4. Okay fellow Datsun fans. I need some get up in go in this truck so its getting a 350 so hush about it, its happening, and no, I will not sell my z22 engine. Now that that's out of the way my questions are the following. My truck is a 720 1982, z22 carb, extended cab, 2pc driveshaft, automatic trans 1. Is there any fitment issues for a 350/th350 trans? Radiator/ trans reaching driveshaft in long tail , overdrive, or standard casting trans. Will I have to cut holes in my firewall? 2. Will I have to modify my driveshaft or running gear to get this to work? 3. To just use the 350's mechanical fuel pump do I work around the multiple filters and only use one for the system? or is it okay to have multiple for the pump to work through ? ( I've had otherwise good filters slow up a system before.) 4. What am I looking to do with motor mounts? I appreciate all the helpful answers, just trying to smooth this swap along, its my daily driver, so when I pick the week off to do this, I would love correct crucial parts.
  5. I was refering to bolt locations I can attach chains to so I can remove the z22, just asking for common problems, and I've got the ability, time , and tools to do this, don't you guys worry, not my first rodeo, The 383 s10 of my friends does, lol that crazy bastard
  6. Okay , I'm debating on wether or not to do the small block Americana swap on my 720, and going american trans and whatever rear works, (the stock one takes hell). I'm thinking ford 302, cause front dizzy, and less general bs, so any advice on how to make it fit?? Also, I will be removing my z22, If I don't do the small block swap, I'm Gonna clean it up and the engine bay, But my concern is this, when using my hoist where can I can i attach bolts / chains to on the z22 ? Any problem areas? Also, any hardware I should replace while I'm down there ?
  7. If equipped with an auto trans check the vaccum actuator , or throttle cable to the trans, (if so equipped) this will engage the TCC (torque converter clutch and cause a rich condition in some, and stall the vehicle out). Idk if Datsun added a TCC yet at this point so I may be full of crap, but just somthing I've leanrned with this. Also, fuel filters in these trucks of age get dirty, there is one in the pump itself you can clean , and another outside. It is located just infront of the passenger rear wheel on the frame under a cover plate.
  8. Forgot to mention this is in my z22 720
  9. I have the same issue but I think mine is ignition coil related, becuase the thing dies on all cylinders and It will sputter and keep running then with my foot still on the gas it fires and lugs Somtimes returning to normal and after I pull over and restart it it runs fine. At idle it runs good but has the rough running typical of ignition coils. So yeah
  10. EFI is a godsend! There is a book called HOW TO TUNE AND MODIFY ELECTRONIC ENGINE MANEGMENT SYSTEMS that is the bomb diggity for this. You can even build your own EFI system. Learn engine theory really well and understand electronics and system relations, that is the key to EFI combined with advanced electronics skills. To learn EFI just understand how everything is linked essentially. Be good with diagnostics. EFI is such a power adder and economy saver, I've build a few Chevy 350's , 194's , 3800's and countless Mopar blocks, EFI is amazing. Learn it , it's cool and will help you ! :)
  11. One of our favorite jokes was to call autozone or whatever dick auto supplier that lived near us and felt the need for a 200% markup becuase town was 30 min away and If you couldn't drive well, that's there market anyway, but back to the point, we would call them and ask for a 1997 Toyota Tacoma water pump gasket, and ask them to describe it, and they would say, "well gee, it's narrow at one end with a small oval and had a shaft to a bigger oval." And while they chuckle a bit or struggle to be politically correct over the phone a friend of mine answers "so it looks like a giant penis?" The sales men replies " yep, a big rubber cock outline that's $27.00"
  12. Twodoordime- "I was 14 (11 years ago) roaming eBay. I found 2 510's 400 miles away with bad pictures and body damage. I bought the cars without my fathers permission. We then had to make 2 trips to get the 510's because we didn't have a long enough car hauler. I still own one of those 510's to this day. By 16 I had 3 more 510s of which I have 3 still. They are the 3 keepers. I also knew from very early on I did not want an L series. I have swapped all my driver 510's to ka24's from L series. My favorite 510 has an fj20 but I have never finished it. My father always encouraged working with my hands and welcomed my big dreams of building gorgeous 510's. He never funded them though. I went through other cars while in my teens but always got bored of them.. I had built Hondas, mustangs, a supra, rx7, jeeps, ae86's, and many other cars but I've never been without a 510 to drive. That's my story. Side note, I don't know how I discovered 510's exactly. My dad didn't know what they were I just saw one when I was 13 and decided to save up and buy one. I was also looking at a 1973 roadrunner with a 4spd when I bought my first 510's. I'm so glad I didn't turn into a mopar or muscle guy." Nothing is wrong with mopar , if you have the wallet for it, that crap is fun and classy but damn is it expensive.
  13. 14, it was my 3rd vehicle, bought it becuase it looked fun. I love that 1982 720. Had to wait a year for him to find the title to drive it, I just turned 16 XD
  14. Oh your screwed . California and car guys Do not get along.
