  1. Great advice fellows, I do have an air compressor but it is a bit of an ancient one. I fear water might be lingering in the tank so best no to use it?
  2. I want to clean up the paint a little on my 510 wagon, here is a pic: Basically I'm looking to just clean it up, and maybe roll with a primer job for a while or add some color with a rattle can. How should I prep this surface for a quick spray? it seems to be rattle can over the original paint. I just want to scuff up the paint enough to get something to stick. 800 grit to scuff? let me know your advice. I'm ok with doing a bunch of sanding but don't want to take it down to the metal quite yet.
  3. Thanks for the replies, I found the "throttle stop screw" which is essentially the idle screws from what I gather.
  4. Just an update, I patched up the exhaust leak, and it runs WAY better, no more stumbling and it idles smooth, even takes full throttle inputs well. Still has a problem hot starting, but it levels out. Now the idle is at about 1500rpm which is a bit high for me. I searched the Chilton manual for idle adjustment on the SU Hitachis but didn't locate the idle screws. Any help? THanks!
  5. Heavy exhaust smell in the cabin and when I reach my hand down by the collector, exhaust is shooting out of there pretty hard :)
  6. I've been trying to tackle an exhaust leak between the header and the collector. I went out driving yesterday and had some weird behavior. Any throttle input past %50 would stutter and spit, and I couldn't rev past 3k. Changing gears helped and lower rpm seemed to work better. Could this be the result of the carbs sucking in the burnt exhaust gases? or something different. The problem seemed to happen randomly, I had been driving with the exhaust leak for a few weeks and top end performance was a little iffy, but never this bad.
  7. Thats a beautiful wagon you have there. A few things I've noticed about the car thus far. The windows rattle quite a bit over bumps, I've read about window felt, might try to tackle this soon. Also, the rubber seals around the rear hatch and most of the windows is rotted out. Anyone know where I can get this stuff? There is a small exhaust leak that I can smell in the cabin, looks like it's coming from the header connection to the down pipe. My wife is starting to notice the smell on my clothes :). One other question, would it be beneficial to go to a single carb setup? if so is the weber the best choice? I prefer the simplicity of one carb but don't want a huge performance loss. Thanks!
  8. Gotcha, I need to do something similar as to not scare my passengers :).
  9. It's some sort of Z trans, not sure exactly but it's a 5 speed. 280z maybe?
  10. what did you end up doing for the trans tunnel? Just carpeting over?
  11. Drove it home about 50 miles, highway, some back roads, and in the rain. Aside from the exhaust fumes coming up from the trans tunnel and the wipers going out, she runs great! Plenty of power, was crusing at 70-75 on the highway at 3000rpm. I checked the coil and it does indeed say 12v on it so I guess I'm good to go. The interior needs some work, mainly the trans tunnel hole, I guess I'll do a search and see what others have done to clean that up.
  12. thanks for the advice about the ignition coil, any options for a proper 12v one? Also, the owner says he thinks the carbs are holding it back, not sure what that means but I think he might think it should be faster. What kind of performance should I expect from this? I don't care too much about straight line power but I'm sure I'll have to go through it and check things like ignition timing, carb settings, etc..
  13. Hey folks, I've purchased my first 510, kinda on a whim actually. I'm not sure what inspried me, perhaps it was my trip to Santa Cruz, CA recently where I saw a beautiful coupe. You don't see too many around here in GA. I've always been a lover of station wagons owning a BMW 525iT, Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon, and Subaru Impreza currently. I bought it as a little fun car for around town; having sold off my motorcycles I wanted something fun and obnoxious. See the pic below, it has an l20 motor, 5speed, hicomp pistons, electronic ignition and new front suspension. It's a bit of a rat, but lemme know what you think!
