  1. PnP in my area seldom has anything that "old". I've looked. that was the first place I went. I've been at;east once a week since we got the car home. Lots of Nissan V6's, no inline 6's or 4's. to much rust out here I guess.
  2. Thanks for the reply. so skip it . Wait I'm fusecon will it fit? If not no point in spinning the shafts. How hard / expensive are they to rufurb? I ask because I might be able to get them for weight. and if so we're talking a 100 or so for the both. I can go gwt them in the AM and order parts that afternoon if it's do-able. But if they are not rebuildable, not worth the effort or just don't fit then well they go to dah crusha'. Oh will the pedals from the 85-86 z car work?
  3. Ok so an Old Guy I know says "come on o'er he'a I might have what you is loookin' fer.". He's just acorss the line in NC. he has 2 motors that say NIssan Z on the valve covers laying on the ground in heaps of junk. Pictures can be seen here http://instagram.com/p/kXslAbHCLZ/ http://instagram.com/p/kWI5w0HCMe/ Both still have the tranny attached both are sticks. One the stick was sheared off by something. the other still had the knob and the remains of the shift boot. on the side of one i found a marking that said ZL71B. directly under that was #3, and there was an electrical connector right next to the "#" . no car no drive-shaft's, just 2 motors on the ground in the dirt. what do ya think? Is this a variation of the FS5W71B. I did some research read here. http://forums.nicoclub.com/transmission-help-t519602.html so I guess I'll have to go back and look a little harder for the numbers, but I'm thinking eithwer one of these are the one I'm needing. so how well do these things stand up to just being left out in the weather? I'm going to ask for both and hope to get one of the 2. will the clutch linkage/cables and pedals from an early 300zx work in my case? There is an 86 at PnP right now. What about the differential and axles from the z car. Max's axle boots are busted. I think the Z car had a decent set.
  4. 'Your L3 also has to have a datsun L series bolt pattern, it cant just be from any car. so no those trannies wont work." The bell housing looks removable, can't i just swap out the bell housing from the ford/mazada application and use my maxima's ? or is the bolt pattern that mounts the bell housings also different. Also is any one a member of the nissan diesel forum found here http://nissandiesel....s.org/index.php If so could you let the admin there know I'm having a bear of a time registering with the forum.
  5. HA! thanks. Sigh. this is not going as fast aas it needs to on the budget it has. I don't have 700$ for a tranny to put in an 900$ car. Gee that doesn't include flywheel, clutch and pedals. SOOO the L3 according to wikipedia was in a plethora of vehicles. And there are a few of those vehicles in the PnP but they all had sticks. Would I be able to maybe pull the manual from say a mazda or a ford festiva and swap the bell housing out and and and or no.... yea i'm grasping at straws and sand now. Also at some point in this cars life the caps for the universal on the short shaft were welded in place. ???????? why? The universal is sticking bad and will need replacing, do I weld the new one in?
  6. okaY So I spent a half hour trying to log onto this site. It keeps telling me I'm not activated but if I try to activate it tells me it's activated and that if I have a problem contact an Admin which I can't do unless I log in.......
  7. So I really didn't think to look at the motor in the ZX we saw. this is the VIN : JN1HZ16S7GX085379 built 12/85, Can you determine motors/transmisions from Nissan VIN's? I think the Xterra that was there was a v6 for sure. Are there any non-Nissan uses for this transmission like there are for the L3? How difficult would it be to put in the L4 instead? Trying to widen my options if possible.
  8. Grand! So what cars have this transmission?
  9. So L-series means inline motor like a straight 4 or 6 cylinder?
  10. I found a list from a tranny rebuilder (http://www.midwesttrans.com/fs5w71.html#followingmodels) that says the following use FS5W71b: 810, Versa, 200SX, Pulsar, B210, Maxima, 240SX, Frontier, 280SX, Pathfinder, 300ZX, 720 Series Pickup, 350Z, Titan, Sentra, Hardbody Van, Cube, Xterra is this an accurate list and are there any specific years to look at?
  11. Its definatley an L3N71B tranny. Went to pick n pull and none of the cars that were supposed to have L3s in them had L3s in them, they all had manual transmissions. Sooooooooo which manual transmissions work? We saw an 85\86 300 Z and it had a 5 speed in it, will that work? Do we pull the pedals as well. Oh wait just reread your post, ok. Going to research what cars have that transmission Also, that 300Z was nearly complete in case anybody needed anything. We appreciate every ones comments and feedback, posting pictures on instagram search for @1badmaxd
  12. Yes I saw that. I guess push comes to shove there are some salvage parts and we might get some cash back from it. but the motor is strong, actually had some car flippers offerme 500$ when we were getting it off the dolly and parking it in my friends lot for the night. they heard it run and pulled out the money. We will give it a go and see if we can't get her running right.
  13. Well we got it out and it is indeed a L3N71B. According to Wkipedia that tranny is in like 35 different vehicles, The L4N71B was pretty popular to and seems to have been used in the Mazda Miata all the way up til like 1997..... hhhmm, but I digress. Some one welded the universal caps in place on the tail shaft ????? That joint sticks better than any of my socket drive uni's ever do. Not Good. maybe I can find a decent tail shaft to go with the tranny. SMH. I seen where some one else did that to keep it on. what's up with that? why does it need to be "welded" into place? With so many source car to pull from I'm guessing this shouldn't be to hard to find ? The Shahla half of this project has to work today and it's supposed to snow tomorrow so we might not get to it till Thursday depending on the roads and how much it snows. SE va don't do snow to well. But we gotta get it rolling soon, She's got a job interview tomorrow and we have one car now. @ ArchetypeDatsun we enjoy your IG gallery keep up the good work. gotten some idea's for the Bad Max. @Oakrun A huge thank You!!! for the service manual link. now we can work on the other issues while we try to find the tranny. I'll start an account over on the diesel site later and get with them about parts like you suggested. @datzenmike Thanks for the Pictures and I appreciate the input. Pictures: I started an Instagram acount for the car search for 1badmaxd. I'll post pic and videos of our progress.
  14. There is no overdrive button on the shifter so that clears that up. We are predicted to have snow here tomorrow so we won't be under the car again until Wednesday (no garage). Hopefully it will come right out. In the mean time I'll see about the whole picture posting thing. And I'll check out the other forum mentioned. Thanks for all the replies.
