  1. Yes, I see lots of fwd cars running wider wheels in the rear than the front. Totally rice. Once I saw a civic with that setup, then it turns out that the guy had an acura legend 3.2 v6 sitting the rear....badass. As far as the brakes, Dave at arizon z car convinced me to go this route. The calipers are super light, and he engineered the pistons in the front and rear for good balance. In the end, I still used a brake proportioning valve to really get it dialed it. The first time I ever experienced brake fade (I had heard the term, but never experienced it) I was coming down sqaw peak road in Provo Utah in my 1st 510 hauling ass. All of a sudden, no brake pedal!!!! There were higher powers that saved me, I am sure. I love push cars a bit, and having adequate brakes is awesome. This setup actually saved about 3 lbs per corner replacing the boat anchor s12 toyota calipers and 10" rotors. I highly recommend Arizona Z car. Completely customizes the application, and even at that, its a cheaper kit setup apples for apples for any application I have ever seen anywhere. Put it this way, it was more expensive to replace the brembo rotors, pads and hardware on my M coupe than the whole kit cost for the 510. I'd do it 10x's over.
  2. I am a huge fan of the te37. They were bronze, and look OK on the car. The wheels were on the car when I purchased it. I too think they are a bit too modern for the car. I really have a soft spot for multi piece wheels and the character they add to the look, along with the classic watanabe/panasport design I think they are a home run. If I had a modern wheel on the car, it would be the Volk GTP. I also knew that I wanted to run the 245 35 16 tire that toyo offers, as its a perfect diameter. The Volks were an aggressive fit with a 195 45 15 on them, so no room (+15 offset). I actually had an order with Kodiak wheels in to build me a set of custom wheel halves to get the width's where I wanted them, but in the end, the brakes just didn't allow for the wheel centers to fit properly on the car. To fit around the brakes (especially the rears) took some extreme wheel centers. CCW was amazing to work with on this, as they machined one and sent it to me to make sure they fit. Check out the rough process: As you can tell by that last pic, these brakes required a lot of inside dish. Here are the rear with brakes mounted on the car: Here are the front: You can tell that the front caliper has a lot more clearance to the spokes. We could have machined it closer, but then I would have been deep dish on the front, opposite of what any rwd should look like, and opposite of my other driver (I call it a modern day 510, love it or hate it styling, small compact, light wheight design, quirky driving dynamics (both trailing arm designs), and relatively rare and low cost: , I wish I could have gotten a bit of stagger dish in the rear of the 510, but form follows function here. This is a long term driver/project car for me. Eventual plans are to do a vg33 upgrade, and possible turbo setup (its really tight in there right now. I had a full turbo system designed for it with help of bell intercoolers and jim wolf and race logic, but in the end, I want to fabricate most of the stuff, and I just need more time than I have right now. For now, I take the car to the local porsche club track events once or twice a year. My focus is to get the car really sorted out. I feel its there. The suspension is there, the brakes are there, and I love the wheel and tire setup I am currently running. As far as the side markers go, I didn't do any of the body or paint. That was all done by Kelvin Dietz a decade ago when he built this car for himself (the smurf). He did an amazing job, as they still look factory fresh. I am sure its all about doing it all in metal, with little or no filler.
  3. current: CCW LM16's, 16 x 7.5, 16 x 8.5; 215 40, 245 35 toyo t1r's Previous: Panasport C8's, I had fun restoring them, they didn't end up clearing the 6 pot brakes :( Still one of my favorite wheels of all time. Custom set of Rota RB's, 16 x 7, 16 x 8's with same toyos as ccw's. These did clear the brakes, still have them (2 sets actually). XXR's 15 x 7 et 15, 195 45 toyos, super cheap, but loved the look. They were rollers while I sold the original Gold Volk te37's that the car came with. Other wheels that didn't work or fit because of the brakes(and cant find pics), SSR/Watanabe rs-8's (currently on ebay) that I restored, and a fully polished set of 16 x 7 SSR MKII-r's. What do I have my eye on? Anything that would fit.
  4. How much backspacing is available on the wagons? Are the leaf springs the first obstacle, or the bed of the trunk, or something else. Its been over a decade since I had a wagon. and I never modded it.
  5. doing a cam is a great upgrade. Before the cam power fell completely off at between 5000 and 5500 rpms, now it maintains power all the way up to 7000. Having an wider power band, with no noticeable difference in idle or low end power transformed the vg. I went with the Jim Wolf Cam. I wish I would have documented the before/after with dyno's. Bottom line is its a great upgrade.
  6. 16 x 7.5 et 22 running 205 40 16 and 16 x 8.5 et 35 w/ 245 35 16. No rubbing bouncing around Miller motorsport park. Clearanced LCA's, 200 sx struts. Tight as can be.

  8. I have read that the vg30 was the lightest production V6 of its day. I am really a power hungry guy. One of my other cars is a highly modified BMW M Coupe that had been dyno'd at over 600 wheel. I have considered turbo charging my car, but the VG has great power, a great power band (especially if you do a cam) and great flexibility. I have run the full 4.5 Mile road course out at Miller Motorsports park with the local porsche club chapter. I usually stage in front. Of 20 cars in the intermediate run group I only get passed 3 to 5 times. Last run was especially epic because I was chased by a GT3RS for about 3/4's of a mile through the twisties, and I waved him by on the main straight as he was on his way to 145 MPH where my flying VG powered brick only hits about 110. (I hit 175 in the BMW and I lost my nerve to go any more!). Other cars I got passed that run group was a 996 turbo, 996 gt3, and a cayman s. My 510 can hang with all of them in the tighter section of the course. I think eventually I will bump the compression up, go to a 3.3 liter, and modify the restrictive 200sx plenum. Also remember that I live at about 4500' of elevation. At sea level, its a beast. I have a turbo kit engineered for it on paper (dual gt28rs turbos). It will take lots of money to do correctly, but part of me just loves the way it is. I like the sound of a N/A VG30 in a 510 also. In mine also, the motor sits really far back. Many comment on how well it fits in there.
  9. Ive got a set of rb's staggered 16 x 7/8, brand new. I had to purchase 2 sets from 16 racing to get them to do the custom offset I wanted. offsets are 25 front, 38 rear. Same front spacing front and rear. I have run 245 35 16 and 215 40 16 rear/front. You do have to trim out the lower control arm, but its not difficult. Here are some pics. I have 2 sets, one brand new, never used, one used for just a few thousand miles (I just built some ccw's in 16 x 7.5/8.5) These wheels also cleared the 12" 6 piston arizona z car brake all 4 corners. Brand new ones I would sell for $600 shipped, barely used (absolutely no damage) for $550 shipped anywhere in the lower 48. I am paypal verified. Sorry, no tires. Buy you can get the 245 35 16 t1r tires for $80 a piece shipped on ebay! Feel free to call me if you like at 801-310-8170. or pm me, Greg.
  10. I love CCW's, I have never seen that model. What tire are you running on them front and rear? The 5 spokers look like the wheels that were originally on my car when kelvin owned it (rotas I think?), nice classic clean 5 spoke. Any other information about these cars mechanically?
  11. Not sure on the paint. Yea, XXR's actually werent too heavy for the size, looked good, and they worked fine on the track without any issues. I think they were less than $350 shipped for 15 x 7 et 15. Cant beat that for the money. I liked the style of the centercaps also. That was one thing about the volks, centercaps didn't work on the front. I had the CCW designed to accomodate the front spindle. As far as the struts, they are 1988 200sx V6 struts. I think the damper is a koni adjustable. The black paint I'm not sure on. It is wearing a bit where I rest my arm. I imagine if you prep it well and use a good quality spray paint the end result would be as nice and at least as durable. Sometimes I look at the car and would like to see it with chrome bumpers and the stainless back instead of black.

  13. Yes, it does have headers, JWT cam, tuning. I'm not sure what it puts down, I suspect 180 to 190 rwh, it that. Being at 4500 ft I wouldn't be suprised if it was much less than that. My BMW put down 615 rwhp by the previous owner, never dyno'd it my self except on the street walking liter bikes. I don't car much about the #'s. For tuning, its a good tool, and it ran so good, I havent bothered. Now, as for the cam, wow, what a difference. Before, the power just fell of at just over 5000 rpm's, now it keeps pulling till almost 7000. That unbelievable. gutting the intake manifold seems like a great idea, and going higher compression and 300 cc's bigger would likely keep me from adding turbos. Are there any VG's out there that have documented the gutted intake plenum, and 33 upgrade? Do you really have to do head work also. Would it be crazy to do the 33 upgrade, leave the same heads and intake manifold on if the plenum was gutted. From what I understand the heads really are a weak link, which would make sense how the 4 valve vg30de.
