  1. Picked up a Lynx manifold for that DelLorto. So, here we go, I'll keep you all informed on how it goes.
  2. Do you guys think I'll have to rejet the Hitachi to compensate for the higher displacement and compression, or is she gonna be pretty decent with stock settings? I havn't dicked around much with vehicle carbs this old, and definitely not stock Hitachi's.
  3. Exactly Datzenmike. But which do you suppose is going to give me that? This truck is not going round or down a track, she's gonna be a daily driver and often fetching motorcycles.
  4. That is what I'm intersted in hearing. Thanks MicroMachinery... Although, I'm very acquanted with DelLorto carbs and am kinda eager to attempt tuning this.
  5. Ok, here's the drill. I've got a 73 620, rust free (rare for north Iowa) with the factory automatic trans (also rare). I have a fairly extensive background in custom motoring and am a huge fan of Nissan, but now I run a custom motorcycle shop and am wanting something awesome and unique for a shop truck, datsun fits the bill. While stationed in Japan, I fell in love with the Rb26dett engine (the cars handle light boats(I also own a Miata)didn't like em) and purchased one with only 22k km... Bought the truck for this purpose but after finding out its rarity I decided not to cut her up. (RB is not happy about this) So I decided to rebuild the factory engine and maintain her originality and AWESOME fuel mileage. It was originally an L16 truck, but the fucker I pulled out clearly says L18... Dammit. So now the engine rebuild is nearing completion of her rebuild (which includes almost all new internals) and I'm getting eager to fire it up and run. I've sunk so much into this little bastard that I refuse to quit, sooo, now we get to carburetion. Although I have always huge into EFI, I have a gained serious love for motorcycle carburetors and love the exotic ones that are absolutely amazing. Also having worked on so many motorcycle carbs, I have grown a serious hate for Hitachi buckets of shit that they call carbs..... I did, however, give it a chace and buy the rebuild kit but found way too may bent, dented and damaged parts that it will need to be replaced. AAANNND, I happen to have a DelLorto DHLA 40 that i find beautiful in functon and form that i also have the rebuild kit for. Setting up either are going to cost me near $200, wether it be a replacement carb or a proper manifold. So... after much bullshit and delay... Here's the question... With high compression, better airflow and more displacement is the DHLA, subsequen HiPo manifold and air cleaner going to create more problems for my factory set-up other than tuning? OR..... Should I jsut get a new POS Hitachi? Any body have any intelligent imput, or am I just gonna get the typical trolls?
  6. Oh Jesus Save Me! I was just looking for pistons and maybe a cam and I end up learning sophmore auto-tech basics all over again...... thanks for the theory guys, but im just trying to find the parts I need.... Anybody know where I can get the parts????
  7. Nah, I think I'll just build the 18 up. I've already got the flex plate and accessories for the 18 and square port and it'll come out way cheaper in the end,(I do a lot of business with the machine shop) Thanks anyway. Anybody have suggestions on cams, exhaust, carbs? I have a couple DHLA's sitting around and i see they have manifolds to put those on, or i was thinking about making a manifold to mount a Mikuni 34300 rack on her. The factory squirtbox isn't in too bad of shape, but doesn't look like much fun to work with, I hate Hitachi carbs on bikes, (not to mention ugly as fuck)... I was reading the discussions you guys were having about manifolds vs. headers and my header is in decent shape, but the ports look quite restrictive to me. There are large round protrusions in the mouths of all 4 and quite a large depression in the middle of the Siamese runner. Maybe I'm over thinking this engine because I work on high performance motorcycles all day, but I really want to smooth that kind of shit out, if not replace it. Im gonna lay her down a bit too, nothing too dramatic, just your standard torsion adj and blocks. I like the way they look with the modern Nissan truck wheels on em too, so I might start looking for a set in the local yards.
  8. Who would have one of those in north Iowa?
  9. Anybody use these before? http://www.datsport.com/engine-piston-hypatec.html I like the comp ratio, they come in many overbore sizes, and the coated skirts are definitely a plus.
  10. Ok, i see we definitely have a consensus here. So what are the best pistons available for the 18 that will be good for a daily driver but still offer some added performance and aren't too god awful expensive?
  11. My colleagues here are suggesting i fix it and sell it. An extended cab is what i actually wanted when this one fell into my lap and would make my life way easier with the swap. Especially if i can find one with 4wd. Anyone know of one for sale, and maybe someone who would want mine when she's working again?
  12. I definitely agree, its the simplest of engines, we pulled her apart to check bearings and replace gaskets since i had them and she was out for a flex plate anyway. We found terrible build up on the pistons and crud resembling dog shit on the number 3 and 1. Rings were seized on the #3 and the #4 for some reason was ring-lipped to hell and therefore is requiring an overbore. Pistons and rings are going to cost me around $400 for the hp ones or $300 for basic. now i need a new head gasket, since i bought the kit for the 16 and i still dont even know if the trans is gonna work properly.
  13. But the problem is, why put several hundred dollars into rebuilding a stock 18 when i could put that money into the swap? is anyone going to want to buy the 18 when i pull it back out?
  14. exactly, this one came original 16,
