  1. Correct me if I'm wrong (because I often am) but doesn't the NA 83 280zx come with a 3.9 r200 dif? I'm planning on swapping that as well. I should be picking up the car this weekend, it'll probably be a week or two before I start parting it out.
  2. So I'm picking up an 83 280zx NA this weekend for parts. I'm going to be using the engine and trans in my 260z. Is there anything else I should take off the car that would swap over?

    Spirt7's 260z

Hi all! I've been on here a few months, but figured I would start a thread in order to keep track of what I have done to this car. A few months back, I picked up a 73 z and a 74 z for $500 (the guy was selling them as a set). As i'm just building this for a fun secondary vehicle, I decided to sell the 73 (little bit nicer shape) and put the money into the 74 (I sold the 73 for $1000, so I doubled my money). I'm not really sure what direction I'm going to go in yet for this car, but for the time being I'm just going to get it running and road worthy. The guy I bought it off of said it hadn't been started since the 90's. Here is the 74 before I bought it Pretty haggard shape, but it was essentially free. Lots and lots of rust on this thing. I'v just enrolled in a welding class as it's something I've always wanted to know how to do, and I figure I will be able to do some of the rust repairs myself. I started out cleaning the gas tank, resealing it, cleaning all the fuel lines, changed the oil, replaced, waterpump, fuel pump, ditched the flat top carbs for a set of round tops i rebuilt, and did a little general clean up. First time trying to start the car after carb rebuild. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVmGdix-QUA Working on cleaning up the valve cover Little red paint Voilà! Instant improvement! This is where I am now. Waiting for my synchmaster to arrive in the mail so I can get the carbs tuned. So far this has been a lot of fun and quite the learning experience. I've been playing around with 240SX's for the past 10 years, but this is way more rewarding!
  4. I figured it out. Took the needle valve apart, and there was a small piece of debris preventing the plunger piece from moving up and down.
  5. Sorry, it is on SU's from a 240z. Fuel comes out the front of the carb and then eventually the breather tube on the float bowl. The float should be set to the right spot, I'm just not sure how to test the needle valve to make sure it is functioning properly.
  6. So my back carb is overflowing with fuel. I've taken the float bowl lid off and I'm not sure how to test the needle valve. If I blow through it, and push on the needle, it does not stop air. Is this correct, or is there something wrong with my needle valve?
  7. I'm really thinking about ditching the flat tops altogether purely based on the fact that I can't hardly any information on them.
  8. Here's a pic of one of the carbs that was originally on the car. the sight glass has been circled.
  9. They are the flat top carbs off a 73. As far as I can tell, they are the same as 74 but without the coolant lines running through it
  10. Ok, I pulled the plugs today, looks like cylinders 3 4 and 5 are black and a little wet (it dries, so it think it's fuel), but 12 and 6 look new still. I'm not sure what that could indicate though. I'm not sure how those cylinders could not be getting fuel, and if I am getting fuel, shouldn't the car start since it will run a few seconds off of starting fluid?
  11. Yeah, new fuel, new filter, blew out the lines. I can disconect the line running to the carb and crank the car, gas definitely comes out. I replaced them with new flat top carbs. I really think the issue has to be in the carbs somewhere, but like I said, I don't really know where to start with the settings to ensure at least a rough start up.
  12. Hi all, I recently picked up a 260z for $250. The car sat for at least 12 years, probably more. I'm trying to get the thing started, but I just don't really understand carbs all that well. I started out cleaning the fuel tank and replacing the pumps (electric and mechanical), I had an issue with my original carbs spewing gas from the front, so I found a set on ebay. I can get the car to run for a few seconds off of starting fluid. The pump is working, and the sight glass on the carb is half full. I have downloaded the FSM. I'm a little confused as it does not give me a starting setting for the carb. It starts out saying to warm the engine first (can't do that with it not running, lol). I also looked in the trouble shooting. For "engine does not start" it says... Overflow...I don't have fuel overflowing from the carb, so I don't think it's this. No Fuel Fed to Engine...the fuel pump is working, and there is fuel in the carb. (Possibly bad needle valve??? How would I check this?) Improper Idling Adjustment...It says to readjust, but again, I don't know where to start with the settings. Defective Suction Piston.... Is the suction piston the large metel piece inside the carb that can be raised form the front intake side of the carb?
  13. The 240z is the better of the two, but I think that's the one I'm going to be selling. Still, both are in completely salvageable shape!
  14. Hi all, I'm new here and I just picked up two Z's for $500. I'm probably going to be selling one of them, and turning the other into a cheap, fun autocross vehicle. One is a 73 240z and the other is a 74 260z. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Aaron, and here are couple pics of the cars.
