    CA Smog

Oh boy!!! Another CA smog horror story!!! Check everything as mentioned, but be prepared to swap carburetors until you get one that actually works. I bought a (several) fully re manufactured carb from a "reputable" carb shop only to have it run way too rich. After fighting with this for some time, I just rebuilt my old one again and all was good. I own a smog analyzer, btw, so I do know what's what with these trucks. A lot of these rebuilds have jets in them for other states and while running well, they will NEVER pass CALI Smog. I hope that's not your problem, but something to think about once you eliminated everything else. One thing you CAN try is to actually RICHEN the mixture to test if your CAT is actually lighting up. Some carbs have been so starved by the smog gestapo that they ran too lean to light the CAT. So it also won't pass. I DID have this happen to me. Was "close" but too close on the edge of failing. I riched the mixture and suddenly the needles on my old snap-on gas analyzer went up, then back down. Almost to ZERO. HUH.... Passed with loads of room to spare. And don't forget.... Cali wants all old vehicles GONE, so they are lowering the bar until old cars simply will not pass any more. I'm thinking of doing an electric conversion in the future just to give them the middle finger. I love my little 720. Had him since 91.
  2. That IS the adjustment. Small, hard to reach screw on the fast idle cam. I had a similar idle. Brought it down to about 2000 rpm. Engine needs to warm up quickly, so don't drop it too low.
  3. I feel your pain.... welcome to Kalifornia! I need to do the head on my 720, almost afraid to put any money into the truck because they are desperate to always fail it.
  4. Smog, man.... SMOG!!! It's a battle every 2 years... and they get more creative in failing you. They WANT the old cars and trucks GONE. I have to do mine again and question if fixing the engine is even worth the battle, (Head gasket at 164K) or store the truck until I can move out of this damn state and take it with me.

    Carburetor Help

It's good you are fixing the original feedback carb. The Webers are fine, but the feedback carb when working right is actually very good to drive and gets much better mileage. The system turns off the fuel when coasting. I get about 31mpg out of my 2wd standard cab with the original carb in California. 17mpg with the diagnostic plug open to bypass the "control". I'm stuck here, as far as smog goes, but I have rebuilt the carb twice in 32 years and the truck just hums along on the freeway. You guys NOT in Cali are pretty lucky, but here they will fail you for the wrong color paint!
  6. Interesting idea. The textured finish also hides any blemishes in the work.

    Terrible Gas Mileage

Does your truck have the electronic feedback carb? Because the mileage tends to suck on the 4X4 with out it, or if it's not working. I never got over 14-17 mpg out of my 4X4 WITH the feedback carb. That system HAS to work right to get decent mileage.
  8. Not sure if I ever posted this before, but I did get to 105 on the speedo on a long..... VERY LONG run through the Mojave desert. I almost ran out of planet, but it did get up there.... The first 85mph were easy. But then.... Oh yeah, 85 Standard cab, standard bed, 2wd 5speed with a camper shell. Maybe the shell gave it some aerodynamics.
  9. In Los Angeles, people seem to think a beaten up example is made out of gold. Salvage titles and all. I have also seen a lot of these trucks for sale in Cali for wayy too much asking money, being UN-SMOGGABLE. Thus, useless here. I'm keeping the surface rust on mine. The minute I paint it and make it perfect, some fool will T-bone it.
  10. Was wondering what the outcome of this was. Too bad we can't do this in Kalifornia. I drove a weber equipped 720 and loved it, but the guy was desperate to sell it because he couldn't register it here.
  11. The dash covers are an OK solution. I have one for my blue dash. However, in hot climates it will warp a little. Still, better than what I had before. I actually have a flawless brown dash that I have hoarded for many years, but I dare not install it because, yes, it'll probably just crack in short order. Was planning on doing my interior in brown with leather seats, soo.... But so far I haven't gotten to it.

    My 720 Resto

Belt tensioners use an ordinary sealed bearing you can change out. No need to replace the pulleys.

    The Road Dog

What the hell????? I have NEVER seen a colored cluster like that before either. That's.... pretty damn cool! I wonder if that's an odd factory cluster, different country or someone actually DID that??
  14. If you can't get one.... jb weld and a file can do wonders.
  15. Not really. The secondary barrel won't even open unless under high load, so that's normal. The primary is a little sputtery but it is metering fuel. You have to check the fuel level in the sight glass in front with the engine running. it should be right at the black dot. Many issues with this carb are due to improper adjustments and vacuum leaks. Hell, ANY vacuum leak makes these truck run like crap! I'm not a fan of shop rebuilt carburetors, they rarely actually work right. After 5 or 6, I learned to do my own. You DID change the fuel filters? If you have the stock pump, there is also one in the bottom of the pump as well as the one in line.
