  1. I dig this. What parts specifically do you think you might swap? Any plans to power your truck with the bottled stuff?
  2. Thanks guys, I do see that there are some pretty big vacuum leaks where the various emissions hoses have rotted away. Can I just plug all that stuff up and be happy?.. or are there some emissions components that I really need to make the car fuel efficent? I don't know how the emissions gear works, or even what most of it is, and like alot of people I'm inclined to get rid of things that I don't understand. As for the smoke, I did soak the cylinders for a long time with Marvel Mystery Oil, would that do it? And yes I did give the engine a fresh oil change that then sat their for a couple of years..
  3. PS - The mosquitoes were really bad yesterday, until after the Datsun did its business, and then there were NO mosquitoes. : )
  4. So I work on alot of things at once, and only get to the Datsun now and then. But finally yesterday I finished installing the new-to-me used Hitachi carb on my '80 210's a14. Fuel pump/tank issues were finally sorted out as well, and as it cranked i watched the gasoline splash into the carb through its little peep window. Then, the engine started on gas for the first time since about 1993. Two bad things happened. First, the car immediately generated a massive cloud of thick white smoke, filling my yard and the street. You couldn't see ten feet through it. Even after running the engine for only 30 seconds, there was enough smoke to kill or run off every mosquito over a whole city block. The cloud slowly spread out and even more slowly floated towards the crowded restaurant across the street, which does have a patio, and it sort of hung around there for a while like a foul-smelling bum. I was pretty sure one of those people was going to call the fire department. Well I'm a vegetarian and don't like smelling the crap they pump out all the time, so I guess I got them back. But I'm not enough of a jerk to have enjoyed it, so I packed up my stuff and figure I'll try again when the restaurant is closed. The other bad thing that happened is that the engine had runaway acceleration. A quick manual pump of the accelerator made no difference, the engine was already running flat out. What is that about? I tried to hook up all the vaccum tubes and stuff, but it's likely I got some of that wrong. I just have the distributor hotwired due to some shorts in the stock wiring, so there was no power to the electric choke or whatever that wire is supposed to go to. I spent about 20 minutes searching the board and reading up on Hitachi carb adjustment, and consulted with Mr. Chilton as well. I'm a newb, and am still pretty clueless as to what to do about the white smoke and the acceleration, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks-
  5. And for a mere $25,500... 1963 Datsun Fairlady http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/4011871511.html
  6. Yeah, I don't know about Rainer, but the crackheads and meth addicts around here aren't willing to work that hard for a hustle. I've been working on the 210 out front late at night, and I always know it's time to come in when the crack whore reaches the point that she's so out of her mind that she starts screaming at her junkie boyfriend, belittling his manhood or threatening to kill him, depending on her level of dope-fueled drunken paranoia that night. Damn that guy puts up with alot. Last night I got the carb off my a14 finally, after finally overcoming Nissan's attempts to completely block access to the rear passenger side carb nut, and I said out loud, 'f*&k that was hard', and the happy addict couple happening to be standing on the street nearby, and she started in some kind of incoherent response, yelling 'Don't think I didn't hear that, b*t*h!! I heard every word! Blah, blah, cuss blah blah blah'... yeah, time to put up the tools.... Datsun and crackheads go together like peanut butter and jelly for dinner! Nice lines on the body of that '67 though.
  7. That's cool you came up with a solution using just what you had, I really like that kind of engineering. Maybe find a way to make a version that's easier to open?
  8. The AAA collector car insurance sounds great. But AAA Texas doesn't seem to offer it. I wonder if another company does have something like this in Texas?
  9. Roger that. For a minute I was wondering if Datsun studs were disposable or something. But the metal looks pretty good, which is more than I can say for the body panels on my '80. But the growing rust patches are reducing the weight, which might save some MPGs.. : )
  10. Gentlemen- My new brake drum comes in a bag that gives alot of advice. I'm already violating the one about not performing brake work without adequate experience, so should I pay attention to the suggestion not to use old studs? Is this a Datsun thing or a CYA thing? My '71 GMC pickup has had the same drum brake studs on it for 42 years, as far as I can tell. Thanks always-
  11. This is serious shit. Where would the world be without dreams, butterflies and rainbows? Also unicorns.
  12. /< rad, ya'll- I'm dreaming of a lightweight fuel efficient, cheap and easy to work on Datsun in my future. This 210 is a wagon, I wonder how much MPG difference it would make to cut off the roof and replace it with some sort of vinyl top?.. and reskin the hood with metal fabric?.. swap the seats with some chinese electric car seats I have that weigh almost nothing.. take out the spare.. not allow fat people (besides myself) to ride.. turn off the engine whenever going downhill.. swap to a plastic 6 gallon tank and fill it only with dreams, butterflies, and rainbows..??
  13. Just saw the 280z and 620 posts- sounds great. : )
  14. Good idea on the brake lines. I also ordered some rubber brake hoses for the 210. The rear ones have one male, one female. The male end threads into both the clutch cylinders. So I think two rear hoses ($4 each on RockAuto), plus a gender changer would work, if that's long enough. I need to get under the car and see. I'm not sure how they will seal though.. on the slave cylinder the line threads all the way in... anybody have thoughts on adding a copper washer or some kind of thread sealer? Thanks all- P
  15. Gentlemen- I was pleased to see how cheap parts are on RockAuto as I get stuff together to redo my '210 which has been sitting for 20 years. Everything rubber is pretty much shot from what I can see, including all the clutch stuff.. I ordered new clutch cylinders, but have not been able to locate a source for a new clutch hose. So... any pointers on how to make my own clutch hose? Like, what size are the fittings and whatnot? I'll just take the cylinders around to hardware stores and see what might fit, but I'd appreciate it if one of ya'll has been down this road and could help save me some time.
