  1. Excellent solution! I think I have both of those things sitting around, if not the tape I have some good strong spray adhesive.
  2. Alright, well I put on my big boy pants and unbolted the dash enough to lift it and got an articulating wrench in there. The dash was less of a PITA than I had imagined, but getting a wrench in was not easy. I updated my Imgur folder to site the complete removal for future users. With that done, I got it loose and out! Quick question: What kind of foam do I need to replace the weather stripping? Is it necessary to re-foam that whole flapper? Thanks again!!!
  3. Alright guys, got everything taken apart and ready to pull the heater... except that one bolt in the back. Looks like it rests right behind the center ventilator duct T splitter thing. At this point do I need to pull the dash? Not sure how I'll get to that screw unless I just loosen the dash and shimmy it up? Anyway, here's pictures of my total progress: https://imgur.com/a/Y7V8QfL Part 2: https://imgur.com/a/yQTQwN7 And attached to this post is the diagram with the screw I can't get to(yet). Thanks again, guys!
  4. Fantastic info and thank you guys so much. Looks like I have a slightly different setup in my 82, from what I've read at least the blue and control module are different(my fan has 3 speeds, but the last one isn't working, not sure why). Got the rad drained, hoses disconnected, doing this all while replacing the water pump since everything's already drained. I'm going to go in there tomorrow after some of the snow out here clears up. I'll take some pictures while I do it for future 79-83'ers with the same question. Been kind of a wild ride because I had a bolt snap while pulling my old water pump. For future reference, should I spray some sort of penetrant onto bolts I pull or prepare them in some way? Seems bolts love to snap on this old girl. I can learn to replace parts all day long on you tube, but those little rule of thumb things your dad is supposed to teach you usually aren't included. My dang dad always called a mechanic 😞 Thanks again! I would be pretty freaking lost without y'all.
  5. Update: solved and documented removal with photos and notes here: https://imgur.com/a/yQTQwN7 https://imgur.com/a/Y7V8QfL Happy to give back to this amazing community, thanks again!!! Hey guys! Tried my best finding an answer on my own but couldn't find anything relative to the 1979-1983 720. Do I need to remove the entire dash to remove the heater core on this one? My manual is kind of incomplete on this section, doesn't really say. Trying to save myself the hassle if I don't need to fully disassemble the dash. Thanks in advance!
  6. Did you lengthen the line going from the control/ignition line to the relay or did you reroute it? Thanks!
  7. '82 720 diesel I did find a water resistant Bosch style relay. So kind of mount it by a ground spot?
  8. Where's a good spot to mount it?
  9. Hey y'all! Been having intermittent single click starting issues, it bridge starts with a screwdriver just fine, done all the multimeter testing, etc and the last thing I need to check is if there's a voltage drop on the black & red wire when I try to start it(more than half a volt would be a positive indicator of a bad wire, correct?), but it got dark out and I'll have to do that tomorrow. Plus, it's like every time I try to diagnose it works just fine, but then when I go out and about it's mad at me. Just gotta bring my tools around everywhere and do the diagnostic at Albertsons or something, lol. Regardless, it seems the control wire is the issue because all other ignition parts are new and it is strictly intermittent, either no struggle or single click complete failure. I have found enough great tips on here to know what goes where, the kind of wire to use for control vs voltage, the pin #'s and what not, but am kind of stuck on some minor details that I couldn't locate info on. Where should I install the relay? Should it be closer to the starter or in the cab by the ignition(and that is where the other end of the black and red goes, correct?)? I can only find 5-pin Bosch style, with 2 87's or with an 87 & 87a. Should I just not connect an 87 or the 87a? Do I splice in somewhere for the 12v or run a lead all the way to the positive battery terminal(I know this is probably a dumb question but I'm a noob on electrical)? Where's the best spot to splice or connect for that? And finally, all this is pretty much because it would be major pain in the ass to take apart the harness and replace the control wire, right? Just wanting to understand the why's behind the how's. Thank y'all!
  10. Here's what I have put together today: What do y'all think? I used automotive 10ga wire, automotive shrink tube and ring ends... still using the household prongs but soldered them heavily. They sit tight in the link and there's no exposed metal. Maybe overkill, but I think it'll work great. Thoughts?
  11. I actually have one from that site still new. They just don't have the metal clip that connects to the battery lead. Seems nobody does, so that's what this workaround is for, just to connect the good fusible link I have to the battery.
  12. Maybe cut out the long spades completely from the vinyl on the AC pieces and solder them to proper wires to ring terminals, then shrink wrap over all of it? Or maybe just suspend it all in a glob of silicone sealant? Is that dumb? The problem I have is finding long spades to go into those three slots. The AC plugs fit so they're literally all I can find to work with. Sorry for all the questions, I grew up in a family that didn't even have a power drill. Definitely going to leave my kids with at least a little bit of know how.
  13. I measured the lamp wire, surprisingly 12ga! I got some ring terminals to bolt the lamp wire onto the positive lead.
  14. I have a fusible link. I am just trying to connect it to my battery terminal with this solution. I am having trouble finding anything the correct length and width of those blades to make something proper, but the home cable is the right size and wire diameter. Would the issue be the insulation or what?
  15. So the clip to my 82 720 diesel fusible link is missing(clipped off and stolen with the battery) and I can't find it online anywhere. I do have a fusible link(the one pictured is my old broken one that I am using to fashion my work around connector), this work around is just to connect my fusible link to the battery terminal. I thought of a work around by cutting up some two-prong extension cables and sticking them in the link terminal and connecting them to my battery terminal via loops. Is this a dumb idea? I figured it would work as the wire gauge is thicker on my work around end than the fusible link.
