#1566399 L20b compatible Carbs

Posted by paradime on Today, 02:46 PM

As Racer and Jessie said, compatibility is relative. If I can add my $.02, a set of carbs off a 1000cc + motorcycle. May not be "bolt on" compatible, but it's a great option. Low cost, look sick, loads of parts and upgrades, and more unique than most. Worth researching.

#1566374 Anyone watch Wheeler Dealers?

Posted by paradime on Today, 11:05 AM

It was awesome to see James and his famous/infamous Dime Arcade, and it's always great to see a Datsun getting love bombed on national tv. Wheeler Dealer was one of the better car shows around, and I've been watching it for years. I loved the 240Z episode, and I've always wanted to see them crack into a 510. So finally seeing it happen, but in the hands of this made for tv wanker with New and Improved scripted reality was disappointing. As selfish as it might be, I wanted to hear what my old buddy Edd has to say about the greatest car of all time.

Without Edd China it's not Wheeler Dealer any more, it's Wanker Dealer now.

As long as you expect free hosting, expect to get screwed.  Photobucket/etc don't make any money from advertising with 3rd party hosting...

YouTube seems to have done alright without ads in their 3rd party hosting. Maybe a banner ad above picts would have been a less scam-ish way for PB to have made money?

"Ransomware" may not be an accurate term, but holding your digital media hostage (to what ever degree) and demanding money to reestablish access to your media seems like ransomwhatever to me.

I can't say I've lost interest, but my impatience and resentment buttons were pushed for sure.

Here's some loaded questions regarding throwing a shit ton of power through the 510's rear suspension.

Although it can, the 510's semi trailing arm rear suspension design/geometry was never intended to handle the power and torque of a modern possibly turbocharged engine. Specifically, the issues of squatting under hard acceleration, and instability from trail through steering when powering out of hard corners. We all anticipate the day when an aftermarket suspension will solve these issues, but this is a far more technically difficult task than meets the eye. For the moment lets focus on what's available.

Obviously, if you're pushing performance in competitive pursuits, road comfort has less importance, but is there some good middle ground you've found?

Assuming you've corrected toe after lowering, what are some ways you've found to deal with squatting?

I've heard of guys embracing trail through, even removing the rear roll bar all together. I've also seen guys go to great lengths to eliminate any body roll with fat ass roll bars and ridiculously stiff springs and shock damping. Would it be beneficial/harmful to have very limited body roll with road "comfortable ish" spring and damping rates?

Interesting when you consider The Beatles released Sgt May 26, 1967...

The Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band came from New Vaudeville Band after they broke up.

7 months of waiting for yet another demonstration of an excruciatingly complex solution to a simple problem. There is such a thing as being too British... Am I right?

My inner child who want's it now is very conflicted with my inner drill sergeant who want's it done right. The tension build up after half a year is intense.

Funny, Back in the 80s I thought this was a trans guy who sang this song... Turns out I was close.

You're right nl320what, we are describing the same thing, but approaching it from different angles. Race teams have done extensive testing on ethanol, and adjusting for improved combustion via valve size or cam lift. This can yield better performance and milage in a naturally aspirated application. In fact, I've read about guys tuning the turbo RB26 on ethanol who are getting more power by running a Tomei stage 1 intake cam and a totally stock exhaust cam. This plays into the higher hydrodynamic pressure of ethanol. This is another byproduct of requiring a richer mixture of a highly oxygenated fuel, it razes compression in the combustion chamber. My perspective is limited to a specific application of forced induction, and a linear direct throttle response for back road/track driving.

I've read tons of magazine articles comparing the performance of high octane gas, ethanol, and methanol blends. None of them have used objective controls in testing these fuels. In every test they are using a car designed to run gasoline, and for one reason or another, the ethanol blend is reduced well below 85%. They never have the fuel system and engine management upgrades necessary to test these fuels equally, ie larger injectors flex fuel sensor and properly tuned ECU.  At some point you have to assume they are looking for conditions to support a desired outcome. Inevitably the shortcomings of ethanol are accentuated, but the funny thing is, ethanol always produces more power.

A perfect example is this dragzine.com article below. They call it "E85" Versus All, but admit the actual blend they used was only 40% ethanol. At first they claim it was the actual blend at the pump, with a BS blurb about how inconsistent the ratio is. BS because federal regulation allows a range of 65-85% ratio depending on seasonal climate changes. Shortly after they finally admit they weren't able to test a higher ratio of ethanol due to the limited injector size of the car they used. It there's one thing in this article I agree with, it's that you need a flex fuel sensor, Wide Band 02 sensor, and an ECU map designed adjust for any blend on the fly.

Todays daily drivers aren't designed to run e85, and I'm not holding my breath for that to change any time soon. On the horizon, more and more high performance cars are being designed around smaller lighter turbocharged engines, so I would expect ethanol will likely play a part in that revolution. Today, if you have a forced induction weekend track car, it's magic secret sauce. In the pursuit of going faster, at $3.50 a gallon e85's milage rating is an after thought.
