  1. Thanks for the information. Seems like on the 720 and d21 this is the most common big thing to go wrong with them. Thanks again. Was starting to just look for a wrecked ford or chevy to just swap in the motor and tranny.
  2. Does a z24 have the same bolt pattern as the ka24 motor? I believe, I read the z22 and the l18 l20 and such all had different bolt patterns. Thanks
  3. It is suppose to be from the ka24i motor. I know on measurements others have gave me that it seemed to be like 30" long between the 2 lengths of the 71b transmissions. My main thing is that My slip yoke from the old tranny fits the new to me tranny. I can shorten or lengthen a shaft easy enough. That is free except for time and work. If I had to buy a yoke that would cost more dollars that I do not have. Moving the mount is easy enough to do to. I would even be happy with a 4 speed if I had it cause the 5th gear is useless in these under powered trucks with bigger tires. Thanks for the information Ronny Lower gear ratios are numerically higher so the hard body transmission is not geared with lower gears than the 720 4x4. I know at a quick look I would say the same thing. Thanks again
  4. Ok sorry if I should of read this somewhere and missed it. I have a 84 720 4x4 with a bad transmission. The main shaft is broken. It has a FS5W71b in the short length of 26.5 and goes to the divorced t-case. I have found a FS5W71c transmission on craigslist. It is said to be from a 97 hard body. I read the guide that I think Datsun Mike had put up in the past. It says on like page 17 that the c has a larger main shaft and has a bigger driveshaft diameter than the b if I read it right. But of course I am not sure about this and some of you would know. I know the transmission is longer and I am able to shorten the intermediate drive shaft between the tranny and t-case. I was just wonder if the slip yoke is the same from the b to the c or if it is different? It is a long way to go get this and do not want to drive 1.5 hours to find out the tail shaft is a different size and will not work. The front case and bearings of my transmission are good like someone had been in it before. The truck has 225k on it Thanks Ronny
  5. Oh well will try a little more later. Will go look at the post instructions. Seems like it has been years and this new windows 8 pc all seems a little strange. Also I have not got the cover off the tail end of the tranny yet. It is still just hanging on like I need to take loose something from the shift linkage.
  6. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/ronnny33/100_1815.jpg Been a bit so Have to try to post pictures again. Picture of just behind the front gear of the main shaft. Looks as if someone put in new bearings not long ago no play in any of them. Just want to see if this picture works.
  7. I did not drain before taking the driveshaft out of the back but caught most of it. the front driveshaft could not unbolt from the t-case without cutting bolts. So no need to say that the speedo cable is on the transfer case. Took loose the front differential after could not get the tranny out. The one bolt in the front and the brace in the rear. Still could not get it out until I figured out there is a plate to remove in the floorboard between the 2 shifters that allow the rear to go up enough to let the front drop out. Got the front case off the tranny and other than bearing having a lot of play do not see any signs as to why fifth gear sounds so bad. Again I have pics but not sure when I will post yet.
  8. old post I know but remember the good ole days! Anyhow when it cooled off some outside I started on pulling the tranny. Then it got dark so maybe tomorrow will finish. Took loose the front drive shaft and the intermidet shaft took loose the starter and the slave cylinder off. Looking at the few tranny pictures on here I guess this has a slip yoke on the rear of the tranny since I do not have any good pictures. I have read that the back of the motor needs to be supported but I have not done that yet. I have taken down the one bolt on cross member under the tranny. Will have some pictures of this to post later. I also have taken the shifter loose already too.
  9. It stayed in the water over night is all. The front tire found a hole crossing the creek. At 1 time both front tires were under water but the back tires did not leave dry ground. Lifted 1 back tire off the ground and so the open rear end killed me again. When I get this fixed plan on welding the rear end. May have gotten a little sand and a bit of water in it. But the fork seems to have tension and all like it should. But pulling the tranny is about all that is left unless someone thinks of something else.
  10. I need help figuring this out. I was out playing in the yard and got the truck stuck. Pulled it out and the clutch would not disengage. Of course I have no help looking at anything. So I put a vise grip on the hose by the slave cylinder and the pedal was hard to lead to believe it was the slave cylinder. Got a kit a rebuilt it. Made an adjustable rod to hold the clutch pedal and managed to bleed the clutch. I now see that it is actuating like it is suppose to and the arm going into the bell housing all seems to be doing as it should. Gravity bleed and then used the bar to hold the pedal a 1/2 dozen times to bleed all the air out. Now I am right back to where I was when the truck got unstuck but I know the master and slave cylinder is ok. If I put it in 1st or reverse and low range I can start the truck up in gear and drive all over the yard no problems. The shifter does the same as it always did when the truck is not running. But when started and try to put it in gear it will not go or starts to grind. I just need and idea on what to look at next. thanks ronny

    Tire size

my tire as it sets in the yard is almost right under 31". If I could trade these all terrians for a set of 29" mud I would do it in a minute.

    Tire size

I have the 265/75r16 on my truck on late 90's z71 wheels with the torsion bars cranked and about 2" longer shackles in the rear. Almost all the finder trimming you can do on the front closest to the floorboard and if turning and more than a slight hill they rub. But the tires were free to me and close to new. By the way it is a 85 720 4x4 regular cab. Oh and turning to sharp on flat ground they also rub.
  13. my tranny is bad still so don't use 5th gear and I still get 16-18 and have a 32/36 that could use a rebuild

    Transmission Woes

Sorry mike I was just trying to ask. I have the fs5w71b and the bearings are bad in it and getting worse. How hard is it to change all four bearing sets instead of the front two sets? I have rebuild other simple trannys and transfer cases so I am not afraid to do this but would like to get as much information as I can before I try things like this. Ronny

    Transmission Woes

For all that has had this problem with bearings in this. I see that changing the front case or just the bearings is very doable. But how much more is involved in changing the rear bearings also? I would really appreciate a good answer. I have worked on old new process trannys and transfer cases. I was just hoping for a few pics or a write up on the other end of the shafts bearing if I needed to go that far. would really appreciate any feed back on this. Thanks Ronny
