  1. For the effort I think spraying is more effective. I looked at the time that a roller job takes and feel that if I was going to spend that much time on prep I'd just go with real paint. In my opinion if you aren't fixing your rust properly, this is a lot better than real paint. Well, the car itself will hold up a lot longer with this protective coating rather than how it would if someone spent years waiting for the budget for a perfect paint job. For this thing to be repaired properly all the paint would have to be stripped to metal anyway.
  2. We just thinned it according to the directions on the back of the pint can.
  3. It was super simple. I didn't have the time or money to make this job complex, and the goal was to make it one color and slightly better than a rattle can. It exceeded expectations. I removed everything I could easily (taillight, bumpers) Cleaned it really well. Used a wire brush on rust patches, sprayed rustoleum primer from a can onto bare metal rust spots, sanded the entire car with a single grit of paper (I think it was 300), and then my friend sprayed it (Had access to a booth at the time) Total prep time was around 2 hours (that included pulling parts off) My friend didn't want to use his nice gun on the rustoleum paint, so we used a really cheap gun (like the cheapest you can buy from a home improvement store). We thinned it with mineral spirits as per the directions on the back of the pint cans. I used 1 pint of Safety red and 1 pint of safety yellow to make the orange color. Rustoleum self-levels so the completed job actually was very glossy in every part that didn't have surface rust scabs. The zinc content in the rustoleum will slow the corrosion proccess significantly until hopefully someone tears her down and does a full restoration. I sold this car about 2 years ago, just got around to making a video of the process. I have another immaculate wagon I bought from Arizona.
  4. I just made this video showing a sub $100 Rustoleum paint job I did on a 510 wagon I pulled out of the woods. Not perfect, but good for the money. I didn't want to spend too much on this one because I have another wagon that is receiving a full proper restoration.
  5. Hey guys. I'm the owner of Carolinanissans.com and also a Datsun 510 owner. We don't really try to compete with the national forums as a source of information but we are a great place for meeting local Nissan and Datsun enthusiasts. We have meets in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greenville NC, and Greensboro. I have been trying to find other Datsun owners to invite to the forum as we all work with the same engines and generally are into similar cars. We probably have the best Nissan specific classifieds in the Carolinas also. Our forum is invite-only and we have been online since 2003. If anyone would like an invite feel free to PM me!
  6. Long time since my last post. I moved to the Coast of NC and my wagon is still in Charlotte. I'm hoping to have her on the road this summer: 325is leather seats. Got them from a local yard for $20.00 each: new seals/gaskets/valve stem seals on my KA, I powdercoated the valvecover black also: and I got this coolant system valve thing from PBM, this should help keep air bubbles out of the coolant system:
  7. other one I just sold, it had a $60.00 rustoleum paint job. Probably not much for a week or two, moving the car tomorrow. Next thing will probably be a headliner and glass, after that suspension and engine swap.
  8. not much progress tonight. my hood latch works. :-) friday, saturday, sunday, and monday will be working on this car non-stop. EDIT: car looks a different color in every picture. It's more reddish.
  9. KA24DE swap. Started putting it back together tonight. Will be working on it agian after work on thursday and friday and will continue all weekend. Have to move it to a new location to finish it up in about 2 weeks. I'm gonna have to order a new headliner, brake master, 280ZX calipers, pads, and various rubber seals on friday.
