#1569698 Engine shake at shut off

Posted by 620owner on 12 June 2018 - 04:22 AM

I'm getting a slight engine shake at shut off. Just swapped the tranny, wondering if I weakened a motor mount ?

I don't think I have a broken motor mount, drives great but it just started this after the swap.

Could it be something else ?

5-Speed finally in.

Wanted to show the difference in the Speed Pinions.

Original Blue from 5-Speed (280-ZX)

Original Black/Red 28 tooth from 4- Speed

New Silver/Red - 28 tooth

The 4- speed Red would not fit all the way in turned opposite (180).

Comparing the two Red-  original to new 28 tooth,  you can see there is a difference in the angle of the teeth.

The new pinion fit easily in and is speedometer is right on.

Center Bearing Position

5- Speed installed

Can the inner cable be removed at the transmission to lubricate the speedometer cable or does it have to be removed at the speedometer ?

OK, picked up a Dorman and everything fit perfect. I checked the bushings and there was maybe a couple thousands difference in the O.D. One for the books I guess.

Here's some pics:

Just praying I can get the Tranny back up with the pressure plate in place..

Here's a photo of the Direct Replacement Clutch Pilot Bearing:

Timken has a Ball Bearing (202SS) direct replacement.

I.D    = 0.59" or 14.986mm

O.D. = 1.38" or 35.052mm

I think I'm sticking with the Bushing.

Not racing this one, just going to be my work truck and weekend runner.

I got a clutch Kit from, Exedy. The bushing looked exactly like the one I removed. Tested it on the tranny but I didn't spec the outside diameter.

I couldn't get the alignment tool in it. The output shaft appears to be about 16m.

I'll check the outside diameters tonite, you guys got me curious now.

Was going to just go to a Needle Bearing but I don't think they give a much support as a Bushing. ??

Wondering if anyone had run into this issue replacing the clutch pilot bushing.

The bushing fits the output shaft but after install the bushing it must be compressing enough so that the inside diameter is smaller than the shaft not allowing it to fit.

I've never run into this before, I have frozen bushings before to make the install into the crank easier and avoid bunging them up.

I was just going to hone it out a few thousandths but curious I pulled the bushing and after removing it it again fits the tranny output shaft fine, go figure.

I'm going to try another bushing tonight, different manufacturer, will see what happens.

One other question, what's the opinion on using a bushing over a bearing ?

#1565204 Speedometer 5 speed tranny swap

I pulled the output gears tranny gears on both boxes. My original 4 - speed has a Red 20 tooth and the 5- speed has the blue 18 tooth.

I believe Mike you say to just cut a slot opposite (180) and use the original 4-speed Red tooth.

When I look at them this would put the gear offset to the other side, does this than make up for the difference in gear size and allow the output gear mesh with the worm gear OK ?

Others say due to the difference in gear sizes to replace the whole unit.

One other question, I thought all 620 trucks came with 4.375 rear ends. The Red gear would indicate that my 620 has a 4.11 rear end or it would have ben a purple gear … right ?

Now the pictures of my output gears. (Had to heat the tranny cases a little to pop them out)

I finally won the battle. Not for the light hearted that's for sure.

I've done a lot of swaps, transplants, V-8 mod's etc.... but this one is right up there as a real mother.

OK, I'll try to rotate but the rear tail-stock ears  and shifter make that almost impossible.

It's a mother to try to turn...

#1562781 Tranny swap question

OK, wow I was thinking that I could get enough engine tilt to come straight back and out.

Wasn't thinking out of clutch plate tilting the front top of the tranny down and out.

Humm, I'd better get the exhaust out of the way too.

Thought this was going to be a breeze.....

I dropped driveshaft. Removed shifter.Unbolted starter and clutch slave.

Getting ready to unbolt tranny and drop cross member.

Do I have to unbolt the exhaust ?

Looks like plenty of room but not sure if there is enough clearance to firewall ?
