  1. Under hood, yes. it was a disaster. Behind dash **looks** okay, but many cracked connectors, poor wire taps, etc. Going EZ or Painless with the help of a friend.
  2. This project of a truck needs a lot of work before it's drivable. Fuel lines, brake system, rotted electrical. The other day I bit the bullet and ripped out all electrical to find brittle insulation, chewed up copper, etc. Long story short, it might be a while before I actually get it going, but I prefer to get the powertrain out of the way then focus on the other stuff. Since this 5speed / L18 / 210 head combo was supposedly working prior to my ownership, like Mike said, mixing and matching too many things could get messy (even though he's only referring to the throwout bearing & clutch/flywheel ). I at least have this block to decide what to do. Slowly but surely.
  3. Acquired a U67 head this weekend....just so happens it was still attached to L20B. Question now is......drop in L20B/U67 combo or stick with LZ18 flat top hybrid bottom end? My hopes (and they sometimes get crushed) is to keep this daily-able. Single sidedraft weber or something haven't quite decided. Not looking for crazy top end performance just some usable low end grunt. It's mated a 5speed dogleg, just not sure which specifically.
  4. As scary as it was, there was this one time the main crank bolt wouldn't come off my subaru motor. One trick was to get the breaker bar, line it up against the subframe, and crank the starter. Witha loud bang, the "sudden hit" would crack that sucker loose. and of course you need two people, someone to kind of hold the bar steady while the other runs the key in the ignition. One of the most gratifying, anxious, and reckless moments of my life :w00t:
  5. I had less trouble with an axlenut on my 4wd 4runner than I did these flywheel bolts after years of wheeling. 120ft lbs should be cake in comparison. But regardless, I have the utmost respect to you guys on this forum. I dont' want to sound like a fanboi, because in the Subaru EJ25 turbo world, I would say I'm pretty well knowledged. But here it's all foreign to me. so Again..Thanks everyone!
  6. Based on this statement, I'm guessing the existing rods and wrist pins will fit the flattops?
  7. You guys are all great. Thanks for the advice and direction!
  8. Update: Cylinder walls feel smooth and no major damage. Rod bearings look great, no visible damage to the crank (as far as connecting rods go). Haven't been able to remove crank yet for further inspection because flywheel bolts are stuck. Like stuck stuck stuck, will need to soak in some PB blaster and figure out a way to hold down the block & crank while getting breaker bar on that thing. Pistons and rings, all sorts of carnage! can't believe the broken bits didn't score the walls. All of the pistons measure 85mm, and the rods have datsun/nissan markings stamped on them.
  9. 5 bolts on the flywheel. I don't have a bore gauge on me, but rough ruler measurements are 86mm maybe even 86.5mm. That's only from the top deck so not that accurate
  10. Welllll SHOOOOOT, thanks guys. Had to clean up lots of grime to find the stamp. It's an L18.
  11. Thanks Draker! Even if they are mildly scratched, they'll be bored out and fresh again. I hope to get the pistons out in the next day or two. I'm mostly concerned about resurfacing too much and it causing issues with the head/valves
  12. I've been lurking this forum for quite some time now. After many many years, the ol' 521 is getting some attention. After disassembling the L16, I've discovered some major piston damage (walls look okay until I remove the rotating assembly). This is an original L16 with matching 210 head. I'm open to getting another block & head in there (limited funds for this project) but availability seems limited. 1) Not knowing the history of this block, if this gets resurfaced, how far is too far? Based on the scratches around the cylinder, it looks like it was poorly resurfaced with a belt sander or something (after I removed the gasket) Any markings or reference points to see how much room is left for another resurface? 2) Any somewhat modern pistons still around for this L16 with matching overbore rings available?
  13. Subscribed! Your direction is very similar to the visions I have for my 521...eventually, you know, after I get the 521 to run. However I know very little about the sr20s. I'm no stranger to turbo'd setups since all of my turbo knowledge is on the ej25 and subarus (my poor wagon has gone through 2 motors and 2 transmissions because it's daily beaten on and off road). Anyway, hats off to you and for finding one of the last Tomei stroker kits out there! ** I dream of taking the motor cradle out of a WRX, it's motor, cutting some of the engine bay to make it fit. Oh how crazy that would be. flame away.
  14. basic stuff, purge all fuel, new battery. It turns over, has good spark, but never starts. I think it's just a matter of fuel/air carb tuning. I haven't made much time for it, but I was going to try the basics before asking for help. Where's your shop?
