  1. Old fuel pump installed and runs w/o overflooding, need to go check timing and such after doing the dizzy and all, but I just going to assume I need to run the spacer plate with the new fuel pump to make it operate correctly, I just find it messed how one works and one doesn't... things that make the brain go hmmmmmm....
  2. Heey everyone. I generally have no issues fixing this little toy without any questions, but here goes. L18 engine, newer Weber 32/36 installed, otherwise stockish. This car has a rare issue of stalling and not restarting for 10-15 mins, I had always presumed it was the fuel pump as my clear fuel filter would be drained when this happens, I had ordered a pump but hadn't got around to installing it until... Thursday morning I took off for work and it sputtered out and died less than a block from my house, assumed it was the fuel pump so I swapped it that morning (NOS Nikki L18 pump from ebay/Thailand), started it up it ran ok but when putting my tools away it sputtered and died, cranks no start. Gave up, got a ride to work. Tried it Friday after work, starts runs, sputters and dies. At one point I thought it was ignition as my Autometer tach was jumping a bit funny, this morning I rebuilt the distributor new points/condensor and cleaned everything up (very gunky inside, whether this was to fix the problem or not I'm happy I did it) - I reinstalled it and same problem, starts, rev it up to clear it out a bit... which momentarily it starts to run better, very shortly followed by sputtering and death. This time I actually looked into it further, fuel just pouring into the carb (it just fills up the secondary butterfly with fuel... eek). I thought maybe it was a stuck/dirty needle and seat, I've had the carb top off a couple times but it is totally cleared out and the fuel bowl is never full, stays at half-ish. I really don't think its the carb, it was new at the end of last year, looks clean inside. Now I'm back to my NOS Fuel pump, the instructions said it was required to use the spacer, which I have NEVER had on this car and other than a very rare stalling issue have had no problems. Is it possible the old pump either didn't mind not having the spacer plate or it was bent enough to work?? The new pump might just be going nuts without the spacer plate?? Both pumps look identical to me, I will likely go on a hunt for one as its my next option, but just thought I'd get some more input. Or I'll just swap my old pump on, or I'll swap my new diaphrams into the old pump... but I'd rather make it work correctly :p Thanks anyone :p
  3. Well hey, I don't post much, ever, I did introduce myself once with a grand entrance to earn myself a title within 2 posts, that introduction along with a brief history of my car, " http://community.rat...page__p__560874 ". Coles notes, I've had car for nearly 3 years in various states of repair from feces infected shell, to incredibly dangerous to drive (but did anyway), right on up to daily driver status as it is today, all with a very minimal budget except a few key items. This won't be a regularily updated "build" as I try to keep things simple and just drive it, I just wanted to share what I have done with the car and the fun I've had. Anyhow, this is how the car sits now. And by now, I mean two weeks ago, because now its in my garage, but it hasn't changed! Now going back to March-ish, I got a 240z 4 speed for a case of beer, looted some pedals from a friends sitting Goon. Awesome part about this, is I had no idea the different lengths of transmissions available, I just dove in and started my swap, but lucky me I had a long tailed automatic installed (most likely when some previous owner installed the L18) so my driveshaft was a perfect fit. Bingo. More of my ghettoness, I appreciate the fine aftermarket items and mounts available to swap these, but I just used some quality spacers and notched my crossmember to mount everything in place. Naturally my transmission did not come with a shift knob, and I could not find ANYTHING to drill/tap and install it (I like making cool ones, I have an actual cue ball on one of my other vehicles), and then I found this... ha, it didn't last long, I even tried to JB weld a nut into the bottom... After the 4 speed swap, I enjoyed driving it but I repeatedly ran into carburettor issues, last year and again, considering it was an oddball undersized carb off a Nissan Pulsar I fitted last year, I decided to buy myself a Weber 32/36... ebay, yeehaw, only a few adjustments and it starts and runs better than it ever had, though I did lose a air cleaner clip and spent awhile trying to find it on the side of the road at midnight last week, hence the tape around the top for now... (taken with my GoPro hence the wide angle) It ran so good I even laid my first real blackies with it... Well, as stated my previous shift knob didn't last long, I now have this =D Anyway, with the transmission and carburettor all working well enough (might have a fuel pump going) and my local sports car club hosting a Rally-X - which actually takes place at my buddies acreage as he has plowed a course there for the club to use... I finally got to race this baby, I also let my buddy Terry bag it as he had nothing else to play with, so I was able to snap a few photos. More weeeeeeeeeeee And one sitting in the field, after a hazing of dust comes flying over from a different competitor... I like this one... Thats all I have for photos, but I have one more thing... I own a GoPro as previously referenced, and naturally I strapped it to the car when I went racing... edited a bit of me and my buddies best runs and put it up on youtube... ENJOY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRaSyuZcmbY
  4. Well I'm glad you all enjoyed the intro..... bwahha, I *just* looked at my new tag under my name, because I was going to make a comment on why it still said "Newbie" considering my grand entrance. Golden! Just got inside from disassembling, cleaning and sorting the carb once again, will find out tomorrow if it cured my no idling problem, too noisy to run it at 11PM with an obnoxious exhaust note :) I had taken it to work today for the first time ever, got some good reviews... went over pretty well! All is goood. For those of you admiring the straightness and body on my Dime... the previous owner whom I bought it from had never driven it, nor was he actually looking for a 510 when he found it... he couldn't pass it up due to how clean it was. He simply sat on it for 4 years until I picked it up from him so he could continue pursuing whatever Datto he was actually looking for (I can't even remember). The car does has the obvious front fender rust, rear quarter rust and some other very minor bits, otherwise it is clean... floors are great, and the actual structure is clean and awesome, no weird rust spots to report. Most the paint is original minus some previous repair/repaint on the passenger rear quarter, which looks awful and was done horribly! All of that simply makes it more of a Ratsun. When I originally had it going (as you can slightly tell at the very end of the video) the hood painted flat black by me already, unknown to me at the time that the original 510 rally cars were red four doors with a black hood... vaguely close to what I'd already done, hence why I also put the single fog light on at this time... Gran Turismo 5 taught me all that :-) So, anyways, I at least waited till my third post for this, but erm, uh, auuugh........ FOR SALE: 2002 Lexus IS300 Metallic Silver, 5 speed, LSD, Escaine/Leather interior, lowered with some minor other toys. =D Ok ok, I'm not really here to sell that... but... you know, it is for sale still... On to the Dodge Rampage comment... my buddy owns a couple, I've been into Turbo Dodges for almost 10 years so I've played with pretty much anything... even my sister had a 2 door Reliant with a 2.5 Turbo, sidepiped. :) And to everyone, thanks for the welcome!
  5. Radio (Tyler) would be the one I was speaking of in my post - so yup, he's the one that told me I should join up, instead of just lurking a bit like I did two years ago!
  6. Oy everyone... I didn't see an introduce yourself thing, so I figure I'd just throw it out there. For the not so quick, my name is Mike...M. I own a '72 510 4-door automatic pile of awesomeness, which I've actually owned over two years but have only just this past weekend drove it around reliably. I guess I'll go back two years... have never owned an import of any kind but having a soft spot for 510s, I managed to locate one and couldn't pass it up. It had been sitting for a minimum of four years filled with mice feces and that sort of jazz. I got it running shortly thereafter, had some small amounts of fun with it considering the problems it had (no exhaust, shoots flames, gas tank leaked profusely, ran like garbage and none of the electrical worked correctly. Essentially a complete and utter hazard on the road, I put no more than 30 or so miles on it before it went to sleep again for awhile, but before I move on... when I did get it going then I was fooling around and made a video thats been on youtube for awhile... its uh, enjoyable, barely... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yYywbijXKY Anyway, last year I essentially did not touch the car. Earlier this year I acquired some cool bits... 280zx wheels/tires, plus front suspension. Although only a few weeks ago I got a serious itch to drive it courtesy of a random posting on a local info/forsale website about a Vintage Rice Meet taking place, which I would find out afterwards was put on by a member of Ratsun... while I tried like heck to get the car to the meet, I failed, but I still showed up and met some cool guys and got in touch with the the member on here. After I missed the meet, I kept on the car... essentially I tackled everything that was a potential problem and hazard to make the car reliable to simply bomb around in it for fun... not a real build, just a big list of things to fix. I installed a carb from an 85 Nissan Pulsar, redid intake gaskets, redid exhaust (which is still hella loud because I got a free cherry bomb and side-piped it), fixed all the lighting and lots of electrical gremlins (one of the passed owners was dumb as nails, and a complete wiring hack), replaced front brake hoses, rear shoes, remade my gas tank filler neck so it stopped sloshing half my fuel out of the tank, and a good handful of other things. While I still have some tweaks to do, as of this past Saturday I've already put over a 100 miles on it without serious issues (still have a leaking wheel cylinder, and some carb tuning to sort out, and really should quiet down the exhaust). Anyways, thats the story of me and my 510 to this point, although for me it is really a secondary project that I have a very insignificant budget for... my other toy car is an 1988 Dodge Lancer Shelby, a rather rarity and its been my toy for nearly 7 years, and its been built, painted, showed, vandalized, fixed, daily driven most summers, crashed, fixed, road tripped on trips as long as 5000KM, beat on and raced to a best of 12.4@113mph... not too shabby for an 8valve 4 cyl FWD :-) I went out tonight to snap some photos, but it got darker than expected so many of my photos did not turn out... so most of them are crap. Enjoy everyone, threw some in of my Dodge as well (shameless plug). ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Adios!
