There are 3 stock strut lengths Joe. I can't remember them off hand, but, the shortest ones where 68-69, longest ones in 70-71 and intermediate length in 72-73 if I'm right. People measure them from different places too, but I believe you're supposed to measure them from the top of the base to the weld line of the spring perch. If you look at the avatar of my 4 door, those are the old intermediate length struts from a 72 that came stock with that car. I installed the nissan "Euro" front springs uncut and gained about 2 cm of height up front, that's why the nose looks a little high in that picture. I changed them out for 69 struts and now I'm within .5cm of the stock ride height with the same uncut springs.

There were 3 lengths offered, all within 1.5" of each other. Insert length (what matters to me) was 15-16.5"

Zumm, what is it you are trying to accomplish? Are you limited to using 510 struts to play within a certain set of rules?

I could go measure a housing or two if you like. For any kind of performance driving, stock 510 struts are not too useful. If you are ordering new inserts they probably wont be for a 510 anyway, let alone year specific.

The 280ZX stuff costs next to nothing, and you get the benefits of a shorter housing, bigger brakes, and bigger bearings. Use them as the basis of a coilover conversion and you wont be building this stuff all over again.

Feel free to ask if you have any other strut related questions..

Okay what exactly do I have to do to convert my s12 v6 struts to 4 lug with the z32 or wrx caliper? same caliper by the way.

Damn. You thread jack your own forum? :)

Just let me have a pic in my sig too and I will tell you all about it.

Never mind, I already did here

Anyway its a nice forum, keep up the good work, and keep those jackers at bay!!:D

Well basically I got me a pair of s13 front struts I am modifiying to use... probably on set of 280zx struts, since its easy... and I have done it before and they work great. However I am trying to keep my options open to other struts since 280zx struts are getting so hard to get... I found a set but right now I'm broke, when I had money I couldnt find them anywhere. The reason why I wanted to know the strut lengths is because the tiens I have are the superdrifts and they are SUPERshort! I mean whitout lowering the spring collar they have a MAXIMUM travel of like 3", but they have adjustable upper and lower collars to lower it without affecting the travel, plus 24way dampening AND they work with the infamous EDFC.... whoa I'm tired

EDIT: Ok short and sweet... I need to know the length of a stock 510 or 280zx strut from the top of the top hat to the bottom of the strut (the part that bolts to the steering knuckle). OR from the top of the piston to the bottom (same as above)

280zx will be 23" I am not counting the threads on the shaft, because the top hat will be below them.

You could still go 1 or 2 inches shorter on a lowered car, but eventually you will run out of droop, and the car will like to lift the inside front tire around corners.

If you go way too short, you wont be able to get the wheel on or off.
