Got my Grassroots Motorsports today, saw the picture of your son. Great way for a youngster to stay out of trouble. Congratulations to him and his parents.

Looks like the engine sits about 2" back into the firewall. Shouldn't be that difficult to close up....I've done, uh, I mean seen worse. Hey I was a lot younger then, and that Buick V-6 just wouldn't quite fit. This is a very innovative, and entertaining project....carry on.

Wow hotrodding at its finest, stock is boring anyways.

I think this would be the first miata swap into a datsun truck?

there are a few datsun roadster with BP miata swaps-check out 311s.org site..

I plan to cut out ALOT more of the stock firewall. Just a little at a time. My plan is to use as much of the Miata firewall as I can. Two reasons: 1 - It has a two inch recess built in just over the trans tunnel. This is good because the floor behind the pedals is the same as stock. 2 - The drivers side is set up for the pedal assy to just bolt in.

I also plan to use the Miata floor. It's thicker than the stock floor and the bucket seat mounts are built in! It is also totally rust free.

Do I konw exactly what I'm doing? NO - but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I didn't have much time tonight. I got the sub frame plated. It's now 2.25" lower.

This is with the cut already made & the old piece sitting there.

This is with the cut out removed.

Wow, now that'll definately be a fun drive... you've got me wondering why I'm considering an engine swap with the stock suspension. I think it's time for me to start exploring some more options...

Looks great, and good to hear your son has a hobby that both of you share. Is he helping out with the build, or is he not much of a Datsun man?

He's good at holding things from time to time, but it's not like it was when I was a kid and just wanted to be out in the garage with my dad all of the time. It must be the damn internet / texting / video game BS!

Sorry I'm feeling old now - I need to go lay down.

I doubt this is easier than a KA swap ;)

Nice integration of the floor pan and tunnel.

Whenever I think that I'm out of my mind for putting this much time and money into an old Datsun, all I have to do is look some of your threads to know that I'm not nearly as whack as you are.

You're going to skin a few knuckles, stand up too fast and bump your head, hunt around the floor for the nuts and bolts you dropped, invent a few new cuss words and when you're finished you'll say "That wasn't so hard after all!"

well not in that sense. what i mean is to redo the whole truck like a 240 or redo it like a miata. this seems easier.

dwnshfter - Don't worry about it. I'm having so much fun on this project, I just can't tell you. I've always wanted to do something like this. This is my first attempt at a motor swop, & my first Ratsun & my first "Hot Rod"

I don't know exactly what I'm going to do each time I go out into my shop - I just use the force! The only problem is I keep dreaming about it and I wake up with all these CRAZY ideas in my head. I'm like a little kid with a new toy!

Love the idea that your basically hitting this blind. Go with what feels good a the moment. For not having a "plan" this is turning out pretty awesome.
The floor looks great in the photos. Nice fab work on the mounts as well.
Keep it up.

Man, your first attempt at a motor swap, and you couldn't have done something more complicated. Most people start with, say, an L series or something, and don't end up swapping in 2 subframes, and cutting out the entire floor of the vehicle! Looks awesome though, can't wait to see what it ends up like.

I too wake up in the wee hours of the night, with a new idea of something to do on the 510. Kinda nice sometimes to be out working on the car at 2am.
