What's the best way to get the engine to fire?

I've disconnected the fuel line and have poured gas through the air intake of the carburetor.

Should i choke it?

Should i give it throttle on start?

All 4 plug lines have power, i'll verify the plugs them selves spark of course.

Are there any systems that need power i'm not considering?

other than the distributor and starter?

You need fuel and spark. To a lesser degree you need compression. Mixed and put together in the right order and quantity it will run.

What's the back story ion this?

Has it ever run, that you know of?

How long since it was last run?

If these can't be answered, I'll assume it could be years. In this case maybe the gas is contaminated. Get some fresh gas  and run it to the fuel pump through a hose from a container.

Remove and clean or replace the spark plugs and confirm that there is spark. Plug them into their wires and lay on the grounded valve cover and turn the engine over with the starter. If there is spark I'll assume it's ok.

With the engine turning over with the starter the gas should show in the glass on the front of the carb.... does it?

If you have spark and everything is hooked up ( altinator, water pump, fuel pump and stuff) and the motor turns over fine run a fuel hose from the pump to a gas can to pickup gas (no ethanol ) put a small amount in the carb put your air Cleaner back on and give it a crank and you should get it to fire up. If and when it does fire up make sure to check for any fuel leaks befor you run it very much so you don't set anything on fire. Good luck.

As well all of what Mike said above.

Also OICS (pics) please

So i was cranking the car and it fired out of the carburetor. So i guess it's firing while the intake valve is open? I'm checking the timing and nothing seems to be clear.

The timing mark on the cam sprocket doesn't line up with the cam shaft and the pointer that's supposed to be pointing to the marks on the crankshaft pulley is non existent.

I think i've raised the #1 piston to it's TDC point.

The valves are 11:30 and 3 which isn't correct i believe.

So if anyone could tell me how to depress a cam chain tensioner i'd be very appreciative.

(i know where it is and how to access it, just don't know what to do with it after that)

Can i access the tensioner without removing the timing chain cover?

It's been sitting for years probably 20 plus. surprisingly little rust. The radiator was ripped out and the wiring is nonsensical. I accidentally burned out the coil because it was hooked up wrong. It has an electric fuel pump after the fuel filter which i know works but not sure if it's necessary or not. After market carb which seems fairly clean. The starter was coming apart and not working so i replaced it. The trunk had clutch parts and what i believe was a used oil filter, so hopefully it has a newer filter and a replaced clutch but not likely. Entire ignition is fucked and the steering locks unless you depress a switch. In neutral the left rear wheel will spin, but in gear it won't (with plugs out). Right rear wheel is locked up completely.

So at the moment i'm just trying to get it to run for around 15 seconds to see if it's worth putting any time into.

A backfire through the carb usually indicates a lean condition, normal for what you're trying to do which is start a 20 year old car with so many unknowns. At least it fired!

The pointer on the L16 is beside the crank pulley below the distributor. The L16 had a single pointer and the pulley had 4-5 notches indicating 0, 5, 10, 15.... degrees advance.

Don't be messing with the timing chain tensioner! Unless the cam was out and put in wrong. This needs further checking. No you can't access the tensioner with the timing cover on.

The fact that it has little rust is a good thing. With some patience and help from some folks here and searching and reading you'll get her to work. I believe you can search the North west Datsun site and find a free download PDF of the book how to rebuild your Datsun ohc motor. That may help you some with understanding of the motor.

..when you say the valves are 11.30 and 3, you mean the cam lobes..if so it should be 10 and 2 o'clock

How am i supposed to adjust timing without loosening the timing chain?

You need to confirm stuff before taking things apart.

Ignition or can timing????

Without the timing pointer and the notches on the pulley it will be hard to do. Have the valve cover off so you can see the cam. Set the front lobe (exhaust) at aprox. 2 and the intake around 10. This will near near the top of the compression stroke. Use a long screwdriver in the spark plug hole to be pushed up by the piston to set TDC. Bump it back and forth and get as close as possible.

Look through the top hole in the cam sprocket and you should see a small horizontal etched mark on the cam thrust plate, like this...

Just below it on the back side of the cam sprocket is a V or U shaped notch. Generally the horizontal line should be above the V, like this...

If you are close to this the cam is timed close enough to start. I say close because of the poor method for setting TDC.

Good deal you had me confused when talking about timing and massing with the timing chain. Now that you have it running you can use a timing light to get it right using the marks on the harmonic balence and pointer and distributor.

No, i still need to mess with the timing chain lol. The crank and valves are not in time. The ignition was also out of time but correcting that got it running. I don't need to guess lol, it's not hard to fix timing. In fact i think it's only a couple teeth advanced. I would have done it yesterday but it took me like 2 hours to remove a rusted brake drum. The tire wasn't rotating even when dragged by a truck so it took a lot of beating.
