Clutch Pilot Bushing/Bearing

Wondering if anyone had run into this issue replacing the clutch pilot bushing. 

The bushing fits the output shaft but after install the bushing it must be compressing enough so that the inside diameter is smaller than the shaft not allowing it to fit.

 

I've never run into this before, I have frozen bushings before to make the install into the crank easier and avoid bunging them up.

 

I was just going to hone it out a few thousandths but curious I pulled the bushing and after removing it it again fits the tranny output shaft fine, go figure.

 

I'm going to try another bushing tonight, different manufacturer, will see what happens.

 

One other question, what's the opinion on using a bushing over a bearing ?

Honestly it sounds like you have  an incorect outside diameter bushing.  Check the specs of the bushing before in stalling.  I have received many parts in the correct numbered box that do not fit.  Miss boxed.

Could be some of the cheap, 3rd world auto parts being forced on to us these days.

Or maybe just a slightly out of spec. bushing. Shit happens.

 

All bushings will shrink the ID when they are pressed in.

Most likely the ID is a couple of thousands too small, and when pressed in, shrinks down just a tad too much.

Hone it until it has about .002" clearance.

Just make damn sure you get all the grit & metal dust out, and lube with some good high temp grease.

Helps a bunch if you have an old trans input shaft, or metric dowel pin to try, instead of stabbing the whole box.

I got a clutch Kit from, Exedy. The bushing looked exactly like the one I removed. Tested it on the tranny but I didn't spec the outside diameter.

I couldn't get the alignment tool in it. The output shaft appears to be about 16m.

 

I'll check the outside diameters tonite, you guys got me curious now.

Was going to just go to a Needle Bearing but I don't think they give a much support as a Bushing. ??

Needle bearings are great for race engines, that are pulled on a regular basis, but not so much for a street car because they don't stay lubed very well.

When they go bad, they really score up the trans input shaft.

 

Ball bearings are best, but the crank needs to be machined to accept them.

But nothing wrong with a bushing, they will last a very long time.

 

Typical press fit is 2-3 thousands of an inch.

It's Nissan # 32202-30000 Used on everything  all L, Z, SD diesels, 300zx, all Maximas including FWD, Stanza, Pulsar, Hardbody, Pathfinder, Axxess, 240sxand too many to mention. Use through 2004 and maybe today?

 

Cut to the chase and order one from Nissan dealer. I've never heard of one being tight, ever.

OK, picked up a Dorman and everything fit perfect. I checked the bushings and there was maybe a couple thousands difference in the O.D. One for the books I guess.

Just praying I can get the Tranny back up with the pressure plate in place..
