Truck not running right

Help  I need to move my truck from its storage to a new house. Got the brakes working and got it running again.Starts and goes great for about a minute or so then coughs, stutters, loads up and tries to die. Then it catches again and takes off for another minute or so. I checked the points, looked good, and I had to reset float level, it was way to high. It has an electric fuel pump. It will set there and idle great and never do this but when you try to drive it acts up again,  It is a 72 with the 2 sets of points, any ideas?

Next time it stutters shut it off ASAP and kill the fuel pump. I assume the pump is powered by the ignition switch???

This way the fuel bowl evidence is preserved. Is it empty or or is it over full??? If at the normal line then it's not the fuel delivery.

How old is the gasoline in the truck?  Is the gasoline dirty?   Dirt can get stuck on the needle valve closed by the float, and hold the needle valve open.  This overfills the float bowl

I would try to get a OEM mechanical fuel pump.  Most electric fuel pumps put out too much pressure, and overfill the carb float bowl.

It is very hard to tell if the points are good by looking at them.  You should at least set the point gap with a feeler gauge, but it is way better to set point gap with a dwell meter, about 55 degrees of dwell is good.

Didn't say it was the pump. Could be fuel filter, sticking needle valve, vapor lock several other things. When it quits is the time to look at the fuel level in the carb. Knowing it's right eliminates fuel delivery as a problem.

The fact that it kicks back to life makes me think it’s not float bowl related. If your fuel pump can’t keep up from a dirty filter, clogged line, etc, it’s not going to just spring back to life all by itself, it’s going to die.

If the float bowl was flooding, check the plugs to make sure they aren’t fouled. Could be sooty from overly rich. Also pop the air cleaner off and make sure the choke isn’t stuck completely shut or something obvious like that.

For your sake, only the primary set of points is what’s relevant right now. The retarded points are f’n useless. If that system is even working, it doesn’t activate if the truck is just sitting there idling.

How long has it sat for?

Results are in... the electric fuel pump was mounted in a bracket that was not tight against the pump body. this allowed it to jump around when truck was running and pump works some and then doesnt work some. I ordered an original pump and am waiting to install.  I did the suggestion about running till it tried to stall and then killing the engine quickly. when I looked at carb it had hardly any fuel in it, Thanks

If you want to run an electric pump the stock 720 electric pump is pretty bullet proof.

I installed this one on the driverside frame rail on my 66 520.
