I believe youll be fine.

Youll use the 510 motor mouts you have

Prolem was IF the trans cam from a Napz and put on a L motor the bell housing needed to be swapped.

On NAPZ  cars and truck the carb was on the other side and motor is more straight up.

 but in a 510 the mounts tell the motor the otherway. and the trasns is then tilted.

 

In the END I belive your fine. oher willchime in on this

 

is te 2.4 a high reving motor?

If your using a L series Trans your fine

 

Be honest just rebuilt the L20 and call it good.

2.4 yourll need to do the headgasket mod and I think lengthen the chain

And lengthen the timing cover.

 

I'm with hainz. Just do the L20B and have less headaches.

Sound like you are in over your head already.  All of your questions have been asked many times and answered in many threads.  Research and use google and many answers will be answered.

 

Hainz if you bolt a Z24 block to a L motor trans the trans will be lilted and the shifter will be leaning towards the passenger side.  The L and Z motors lean opposite directions.

If the Z24 NAPS engine is in good running order putting an L head on it basically makes it an L series engine. The 280zx trans will fit and line up correctly. The A87 is .... ok ... but a U67 would have better ports and valve sizing for the larger displacement.

 

To use the Z24, you will need an L series oil pan and pick up tube that fits the vehicle (assume 510?) that the engine is going into. You will need L series engine brackets.You will also need to lengthen the timing chain by this amount 3/4" X two Mercedes Benz master links. (#000997-0598) Then everything from the block forward including the timing cover, replaced with L20B parts. Get a piece of 3/4 aluminum plate and cut out a spacer to fill the small gap between the top of the L20B timing cover and the taller Z24 block height using the old L series head gasket.   Lay the  old L20B gasket over new Z24 head gasket and drill out the missing holes. You'll need a Z24 gasket because of the larger cylinders. Trim the timing chain area off the front and re-use the old L20B gasket with sealer.... it only has to seal in vapors and oil splash. Transmission cross member will need mods to that the 71B 5 speed and the (510 sedan?) driveshaft shortened to 38 3/8"

 

You cannot use Z24 pistons in an L20B block without boring 2mm of the cylinder walls all the way round, a total increase of 4mm to 39mm. Then you would need 150mm long rods which don't exist. So then you would need a Z22 crankshaft fitted with L20B rods and Z24 pistons making an LZ23 engine. Doable but a Z24 block is easier. Rebuilding an L20B is probably more work assuming the Z24 is in good running condition.

I've never really liked the Z24, especially in a swap. Too tall for a 510.

 

And that's not a ton of money for a good motor.

 

If you can find a nice L20B donor, I would spend the money there. Have the bottom end rebuilt to a basic spec, maybe with some custom pistons to bump the CR. Spend most of the money on the head to get a mild porting, a good stable valvetrain and good cam. A stock displacement L20B with dual 44's, a good cyl head and healthy exhaust can make 180 hp or more in street trim.

 

As others have said, there are sooooooo many options for you, but you have to decide what your priorities are. Is HP your main focus? Is your budget firm? Decide which one of these factors is more important and take it from there.

 

BTW- if you are new to vintage Datsun ownership, HP comes at a cost of driveability. It won't be as turn-key reliable as your mom's old Honda Accord.

I already have a good head set up new 45mm Weber sidedafts carbs, building muscle cars not new to me I’ve built up a 95 twin turbo supra over 700 horses. This 510 is a Sunday car only not looking for a Mom Honda. I have my two Mercedes for that.

So what is it you're after? You just want more power? Or something different? What motivates you?

 

If you're after monster power and want to retain the L series appearance under the hood, build a long rod 2200. My favorite L series by far. You'll need a L20B crank, 6" N85 rods from a Z20, custom pistons and the head that you already have. You may need to re-work the chambers of your head to get the squish and the CR right, and you may also need to build the pistons to the head, but once complete, they rev, they make torque and it's still got that vintage vibe. 210 hp with dual 44's or 45's is easily attainable with that combination.

 

If you want less rev and more torque, use the Z22 crank with the same rods for a long rod 2300.
