Heres yet another 620 4 to 5 speed trans question..

I don't think I answered that completely...

4 or 5 spd shouldn't matter but long or short tail will....

Also the Speedo assemblies are offset and centered depending on the gear..

So just be careful when you finally go to change that...

Interesting. I'll have to do some research and see what I'm going to need for my setup. In the mean time I need to get my hands on a 5 spd

Mike, with my setup I'm going for..

L20B w/4.11 rear and future 5 spd..

Whats the real difference between the wide geared trans and a mid with my setup? I know earlier in the thread you made note of the difference between the actual change with a higher/lower ratio rear end. I'm just wondering as far as comfortable driving around town and highway cruising.

I'm just wondering because I may have a '79 wide ratio 5 spd I could purchase but you mentioned it'd be best with a mid ratio most likely with my setup

Also, what are the ratio's of a wide FS5W71B?

You stated a mid-ratio is 3.321.. 2.077..1.308.. 1.000.. 0.864 and rev 3.382 so I already know those

I think the 4.11 is an 18 tooth pinion. The lower the tooth count the faster the speedo reads. As long as you unbolt and exchange the entire sleeve with the gear in it, you shouldn't have any problem swapping 4 to 5 or 5 to 5.... at least if the transmissions are '79 and older.

Wide ratio has a 3.592 first... the other gears I'd have to look up tonight. All 4 and 5 speeds have the same 1 to 1 4th gear.

HOW MANY TEETH ON YOUR PINION GEAR IN THE TRANSMISSION???

No idea. I currently don’t have a 5 speed but I’m searching for one. I do on the other hand have two four speeds now. Not sure on those either I’d have to check.

I was just wondering, aside from the pinion gear subject, what ratio you would prefer with a L20B and a 4.11 rear? Wide or Mid. Wanna find what’s going to best suit the rear end

The '79 620 used a wide ratio and a 4.11

I see no problem with either. I have a car 4.11 with a mid ratio and love it. Truck might be slightly heavier so wide might be a good idea. If you decide to go lower like a 3.889 or 3.70 then a wide is even better.

Your truck was an automatic and a four speed was put it??? Does the speedometer read correctly? I'm looking for a 22 tooth pinion.

Great thanks for the info Mike.

Yeah my truck originally had an auto w/L18. I bought the truck apart so now I’m rebuilding a L20B from a buddy and trying to find a 5 spd to pair up with the 4.11 I just bought

So I don’t know if the speedometer was reading correctly since it wasn’t running

Btw just checked and both my 4 speeds have 20 teeth red speedo pinion gears. My 3 spd auto has 21 teeth violet

Received the 4.11 today and seems to be in decent shape.

A few questions though for this future trans swap..

Original diff to the truck is a 4.625 and now have a 4.11 I will be installing. Will the driveshaft still mate up properly to the new 4.11? Looks like it will but figured I'd ask..

Also, since I originally had a 3 spd auto and going to a 5 speed, will I still be able to use the original driveshaft?

Great! Thanks. Appreciate the help as always

Now to find that speedo pinion

Wait on that till you swap things.. see how much your speedometer is off and adjust... you may already have what you need, you might need one tooth more or less from what might be suggested because of your tire choice even...

Makes sense. Seems like this speedo pinion is a real issue across the 620’s. I’ve seen a few different things on Ratsun

You need to choose a speedometer pinion based on the odometer reading.

The odometer is mechanically connected to the rear wheels by gears, and a cable.

Part of that geared mechanism turns a magnet, inside an aluminium cup.  The aluminium cup is connected to the speedometer needle, and is spring loaded to return to zero.
