datzenmike
Rotate the bump for the starter out of the way. You may have to drop the down pipe also. Geez it might be easier to remove the right side torsion bar. . 1 Quote Link to comment
kelowg
Remove clutch and p/p for bit more room. It can b done but biggest pita ever. Torsions do make it easier, tho ill just pull motor next time a round. 1 Quote Link to comment
620owner
OK, I'll try to rotate but the rear tail-stock ears and shifter make that almost impossible. It's a mother to try to turn... 1 Quote Link to comment

620owner
I finally won the battle. Not for the light hearted that's for sure. I've done a lot of swaps, transplants, V-8 mod's etc.... but this one is right up there as a real mother. 1 Quote Link to comment

620owner
5-Speed finally in. Wanted to show the difference in the Speed Pinions. Original Blue from 5-Speed (280-ZX) Original Black/Red 28 tooth from 4- Speed New Silver/Red - 28 tooth The 4- speed Red would not fit all the way in turned opposite (180). Comparing the two Red- original to new 28 tooth, you can see there is a difference in the angle of the teeth. The new pinion fit easily in and is speedometer is right on. Center Bearing Position 5- Speed installed 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
On a 521, you remove the bench seat, and the plate covering the top of the transmission around the shifter in the cab. Remove the shift lever. Remove the front half of the drive line, get the exhaust pipe out of the way. Remove the rear transmission mount to frame, let the rear end of the transmission rest on the cross member This gives you plenty of room to slide to slide the transmission far enough back to clear the engine. You can rest the bell housing on the torsion bars if you need a rest. Twist the transmission to clear the torsion bars, let the front end of the transmission go forward under the engine, and it is out. Next time you do exhaust work, get two flanges added to the exhaust pipe about 18 inches from the lower manifold connection. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
That is why I pull engine and trans as 1 unit. I do not have to be on my back wrestling a transmission. Also a good time to have the radiator done before installing it after engine and trans is back in. Quote Link to comment
