FS5W71B right hand thread locknut

Does anybody know who might have this for sale? It appears to be 'unobtainable on Algon'  according to Monty Python. OR does anybody know the thread size so I can have some made??

 

I guess I should have said 'main shaft' lock nut.

Yes the mainshaft nut (I believe M27X1) on the earliest 71Bs used to sometimes back of resulting in loss of 5th gear. It was replaced with a nut with a shoulder so it could be tightened and staked. 

 

32354-A7400 was the old number

 

32354-E9803 is for a later maxima transmission.

Here is a picture of what I believe is a 720 transmission with the modified nut.

It's one of the most common failures of that era trans. The nut backs off creating all kinds of problems.

 

When I built one of those a week, I got sick of using a wrench on that nut, so I made a long socket, by cutting a Snap-On socket on the lathe and welding a piece of tubing in between. This allowed me to use a rattle gun on that nut. I made one for the stock 510 4 spd too.

 

After that, I started experiencing a major problem. The gears would bind and weld themselves together. Cause? When the nut was loose, it allowed the gear to walk back and forth creating a groove in the thrust washer and shortening the collar that the bearing rides on. If the washer was re-installed with the groove in the opposite side, it would cause the gear backlash to go away, thus no thrust, and then welded gears. I learned to either replace the washer or sand it smooth, or simply re-install it in the same direction as it came off. That's also when I started blueprinting those transmissions, checking and setting backlash in all the gears and also in the shifting stops.

 

That's a tale of caution, but to make sure it doesn't happen again, use red loctite on the threads and stake the nut in place.
