Swapping out the4-speed with 5- speed.

Changing out U-joints and center bearing. Center bearing rubber had let loose of the bearing.

Question:

Which direction does the bearing go on the drive shaft ?

Flat rubber side toward tranny or away ??

Cant believe I didn't pay attention when I dropped it.. duhh

I don't have the tranny in yet can't slid it in and measure....

Thanks !!

You may be seeing more of them fail, as cheap junk from Thailand, China, and who knows where, infiltrates the market.

I bought one from RockAuto that didn't even have a sealed bearing in it. It had a Shielded bearing, which are not water tight.

That POS was sent right back to them, and I found a nice NOS on eBay.

So look at them close. A metal shield looks completely different than rubber seal.

If you don't see the rubber, send it back.

I just cut a strip of 3/8"rubber conveyor belt and wrapped it around the driveshaft and clamped the 'hold down' back on. Maybe 4-5 turns by an inch wide. Took a couple of test fits to get it right and nice and snug so it wouldn't fall out. The rubber does not spin with the driveshaft, just holds the outer sleeve stationery.

Had planned to replace it with a new one but it worked so well I simply left it on. It was 3-4 years before I removed the whole driveshaft and put a transfer case in. It was still solid.
