Coil died thoughts on replacement

So the 510 came with a trash made in China msd blaster on it. I have a Jacobs FC1000 and a c4 coil I was thinking of using (made in USA). And didn’t know what your thoughts were on it. I have an l20b that has the electronic distributed which I assume uses a magnetic pickup. I noticed some people use the inferior imo 6al from msd which does the same thing only it was made in China. Anyway the thing is sitting on the shelf as I ended up not using it in my RX7 and since nothing coil wise is made in USA and you can’t get made in Germany Bosch blue coils anymore it is the only thing I can think of fine I done want to light 50 bucks on fire buying another msd that will go bad in a year. Yeah if you can’t tell I don’t like I da china garbage at all lol.

Get a Nissan coil, fuck that after market "oOOooo it's so shiny" MSD crap that's only famous for being famous. Never go after market they are rarely an improvement over what the factory used and often inferior.

Coil must be 0.75 to 1.0 ohms without an external ballast when used with a matchbox distributor. Get from any Nissan vehicle made during the '80s.

+1000 on oem vs aftermarket. I had an accel superstock take a shit in a year or less, stock replacement has been going strong for a couple years...it came out of a ‘78 200sx that had who knows how many miles.

Hey! (that's my line) But true. Paint it or make it shiny and people think they need it.

...I tell this to my fishing buddy who has like 100s of lures and swear to god I caught more with live and cut bait. But he still believes in lures..smh.

Like I said I bought the car and it had an MSD on it.  I will look into the Nissan coil (got a part number?) but as far as my Jacobs goes... I have that NOS on the shelf. (it was from before the buyout when they were still made in USA and being made for that matter.)  It came as a combo but I had originally planned to use the FC1000 paired with some RX7 Turbo 2 coils for my 3rd gen RX7.  But since the factory 3rd gen coils seemed to handle 542 RWHP with no problem I figured what was the point and on the shelf it remained.  Anyway fast forward it wasn't going to cost me anything to use for the time being....

On another note though or rather back to the Nissan coil are they hitachi's or ngk??

I read that msd coils are made in China, not sure about the modules or boxes though. Sucks but this is the wave..

Yeah that’s why I was going to use my Jacobs electronics c4 coils and fc1000 that was made in USA and brand new. NLA of course since the company was bought out but alas that will stay on the shelf.  I ended up buying a Denso GT coil that was made in Japan that has an internal resistor (this means less wires which is always good.).  Anyway I should finally have it back up and running soon so I can drive it a couple times before stripping it to the shell.  After that I will be getting it dipped to remove the trash paint that is starting to pop off, get it rust treated and then I will have it powder coated with a paintable powder coat.   This is of course after I fix the trash spot welding and lack of proper alignment of the core support, lower valance, left rear quarter, and and rear tail light panel.  I have no clue if it was the guy responsible for poly prepping the body before painting and “restoring” the vehicle or if that’s just the factory stuff.  Allegedly the car was rust free and I have found several indications of the factory paint on the car but.... I am getting side tracked.  Guess it’s from forum withdrawal.  I’m finally getting my fix!!!

If you have the EI distributor you don't want a coil with an internal (or external) resistor. Those are points coils to limit current flow that will burn out points. What you need is an internal coil resistance of 0.75-1.0 ohms. Points coils are 1.5 plus about 1.5 ohms ballast resistor. The lower ohm coil will give you a higher spark output than a higher one.

Can’t you just use a ballast resistor though if it is lower?

As as for the denso got coils that I ended up with.  (Weren’t any 80’s nissans in the junkyards around here.  The tight restrictions onyards cause them to scrap most of the really old stuff.  Saw a crushed Ghia type 34 when I was hunting for one and about cried.  Anyway any of the new replacements were from China and I just couldn’t convince myself to trust them given the price they were asking.) anyway the gt coil was used in the JDM market on several factory performance models most notably on Toyota’s but I had read that some early hakosukas came with them.  Not sure on the vlidity of the hakosuka claims though but I know a restickered one when they had the external optional ballast was used on the early corolla and Celica GT.  Even my KP61 starlet had the hitachi licensed version of it.  Pretty solid coil anyway.  I will let you know how it works with my matchbox.

The Higher the resistance the weaker the spark. The EI will handle any coil that is 0.75 to 1.0 ohms. Yes you can use a points coil (with a proper ballast) but the only gain will be loosing the points.

At this point I just want to drive it sometime this year I just refuse to knowingly buy anything made in China.  Irrational.... Yes.  And no I don't think manufacturing will ever come back to the USA in the way it once was and yes I own a cell phone, computer, and a tablet (among other things likely or possibly made or components contained made in china.) making me a hypocrite since something in those if not everything in them was made in sino BUT....

The coil claims it works for 12v EI systems but in the same installation page it later mentions for cars with points...  I guess we will see.

I run a used Crane PS91 coil on my El 620.

It's been on there for about 13 years now, and had come off my Cressida, where it had been for about 5 years.

Since then Crane went belly up,  probably due to low profits trying to compete with china crap.

So I searched for months for a Nissan coil on the cross reference list and couldn't find one at all.  The parts were all discontinued and the used market was dry BUT I did happen to find a Standard auto coil for the matchbox that was "NOS" made in Japan!  Unlike all the coils made in China that are only filled 60% of the way with oil this one is filled to the brim (none of that sloshy slosh.)  So this will do for the mean time until I can find an actual Nissan coil.   Does anyone know if using one of the first or second gen RX7 coils will work cause for reasons unknown to myself (given I've never owned a first or second gen RX7...) I have S tons of those in a box on a shelf in the garage.  They are for electronic ignition just not sure if they will work with the matchbox.  Maybe I should slap one of the chinesium replacement igniters on the dizzy and test em to see how long it lasts.
