Cab Swap

Swapping a 1982 Datsun 720 king cab on to a 1985 Nissan standard cab and short box. I planning to do a flat bed after swapping the cabs.

cheaper to find a truck and pull the bed. LESS WORK

I seen Jeffs brother do a cab off.( a running complete (521) that's was work then I said youll never get it back together. Told me I was just negative. Most of the stuff went to the dump. But I got the radiator for free

I say make it work, looks like your already part way into it. If you have drive it will happen, if you don't it won't.

I want a smaller wheel base for wheeling and from my measurements so far the cab should fit on mounts.

To fit a king cab on a regular cab chassis you will likely have to remove the front bed mounts and use the king cab gas tank.

 

 

When fitting the cab on the chassis I find it easiest to line up the front radiator Mounts first and then line the others up from there.

I wasn't sure if i could keep the gas tank or not that was on the regular cab frame.  You are correct about the mounts circle in red needing to be cut down. I working on wire wheeling and painting the frame since it so much easier with nothing on it lol.

Got half of the frame painted last night. Will see how much I a get done this weekend.

There is a step in the top of the king cab gas tank that allows it to fit right under the cab. So yes use the king cab gas tank.

That's right. Only the KC needs this to get the front of the tank to clear. The 4x4 KC tank is also notched but holds almost 3 more gallons. The 4x4 frame is different and the cab may sit higher or you can space the cab higher with a body lift.

Well finish painting the frame over the weekend and I will start on getting the KC ready to swap over to this frame this week.

Before getting rid of the standard cab you might want to make a tempplate of the trans tunnel or cut it out and save it it is most likely different the the 2wd tunnel.  Also cut the rear cab mounts of of the King cab frame and eweld them on to the 4x4 frame.

 

I would not get rid of anything until the swap is completed and driving.

For sure keeping everything till I have the swap done!!

 

I got everything disconnected from the engine and transmission yesterday.

 

 

Sure looks funny without a front bumper of some sort.

If one of the trucks has power steering and AC I would keep those fetures. 

 

I am interested in locating power window and power lock door panels.

The '85 Nissan had a z24 motor in it when i got it about 4 years ago. I pulled the motor and put it in the 82 Datsun. The tag in the engine bay said it had a z22 at one point. When I got the 82 Datsun it had a bad L20B motor. It has power steering box and a pump but the idle pulley is bad so I just going to leave it off for now.

I got the back two mounts that where used for the bed cut off to make room for the KC. Pulled the engine and transmission out last night in the great moon light.

Power steering pump is easily obtainable.  Knock the idler pulley bearing out and replace it.  Becareful with the hoses as the aftermarket hoses are expensive and do not fit well.

 

Nice work removing the bed mounts. 

 

Keep an eye out for a good running KA for when the Z24 wears out.

 

I can not wait to see this with the flat bed on it.

Seems like it might not be to hard and cheaper to fab in AC off of something readily available like a Jeep Cherokee or Civic. Wonder if anyone's done that? Certainly is nice when wheeling. Mount a K&N on it for cabin for filtering too.

I meant if he has a stock AC in either truck to keep it.

 

I used a 720 AC in my 66 520.

Damn I thought only I went to this much trouble. I did the same minus the a/c in my old 620... everything was 720 from the fan box to the heater assembly. There was a hose between the two where the a/c would have been. The 620 wiper was in the way of the fan so I re-mounted it inside the cowl and had to cut a new hole to let the air into the fan. Yours looks great.
