Some problems with my car.

Hi, i just got my hands on a 620 (1500) and i have som few electrical problemes with it so i thought if anyone had any ideas how i'd fix them.

Well , the first thing is that the marker light doesnt flash at all but seems  atleast like the marker switch is working,second the blower motor in the cabinet also doesnt give any signs of life when you try to start it, and the last is that the engine heat indicator on the dashboard doesnt seem to play along either. I wondered if some these problems could be related to eachother in any way like if they belong to the same ground cable or something...Anyhow i dont reallly know where to start so some hints could be very thankful.

Temp Gauge.

If the fuel gauge also does not work it's most likely the common voltage regulator built into the gauge cluster that's at fault... it powers both gauges.

 

If the gas gauge works find the temp sender on the engine. It should have a Yellow/White stripe wire to it and will be somewhere near the thermostat? Ground the wire to the block and what you should see it the temp gauge read full HOT. If not, the gauge is bad or the wire back to the gauge is broken. If it reads HOT then clean the connection and the sender and make sure it is secure. If still not reading the sender is bad.

 

Turn Signals?

If the 4 way emergency flasher works swap the flasher unit with the turn signal unit right beside it. (located on the side of the steering column under the dash) If the turn signals start working then the flasher was bad. (it may even be missing)

 

Heater Fan

The 15 amp fuse is middle of the three on the left side of the box. Turn the fan on and hold a suitable coin across the fuse contacts. If the fan works then the fuse was blown.

Turn signals and heater fan is now working, had bought new side marker lights from china and these were just poor grounded and i replaced the resistor on the heater fan so it started working :). But the temp sensor still doesnt seem to repond.I tried to ground the wire to the block but nothing happened.

Can you tell me where this voltage regulator is located on the car?

 If your fuel gauge is working then it won't be the regulator. It powers both. Follow the sender wire back as far as you can it may be broken.

 

The large round connector on the back of the gauge cluster may just need to be unplugged and plugged back in to make good clean contact.

I cant tell if the fuel gauge is working cause the fuel tank is not mounted on the car right now so the fuel sensor aint connected either.Is it possible that the fuel sensor have to be connected at the same time? And thats why the temp sensor doesnt work?

No. Try grounding the fuel sender. Fuel gauge should read FULL.

 

If reading full, the regulator is working.

 

If no reading perhaps the regulator is not working.

 

 

 

 

The voltage regulator is in the temp gauge but runs the fuel gauge also. Folds a thin strip of fine emery paper, hold the point apart and let close on the paper, pull the paper through the points to clean and polish them. Give it several tries. This should fix it.

 

 

The voltage regulator is simply a bimetallic strip with contacts on the end and a wire wrapped around it. The wire warms the strip, it bends and breaks contact, it cools and makes contact and repeat. This keeps the gauge voltage around 8. If not used the gas and temp gauges would vary their readings at idle charge 12.5-13 often 12 or lower if headlights and fan are on.... and 14.5 when revved up and driving. By providing a constant 8 volts the gauges stay constant also.

Tried to connect the fuel sensor and the fuel gauge started moving, seemed like voltage regulator was working.I started locating any damages on the cable from temp sensor and i found that the pin in the socket was broken.I replaced it and now its working. Thank you for the help Mike :)
