New gauges... maybe?

I have a 1980 king cab. and the po took apart the gauge cluster losing the needle to the speedo in the process. Today I found a cluster out of a 1984 720, to get the wiring correct what all would i need out of the parts truck?

The new cluster has a needle with it... however the plugs that go into the back do not match up.

Get the wiring connectors too. Then get wiring diagrams and you should be set

if i get the connectors with a bit of a pigtail its just a game of following diagrams and soldering?

You probably shouldnt solder, it breaks. Use connectors. But yeah just match them up.

I've done this. The later gauge harness will connect to the two (one Blue one White) 10 pin connectors (just left of the steering column) on the main dash harness but the pins are in different positions. For example a right turn makes the oil pressure light flash, e brake light on lights the ign. lamp. I just poked the pins out and moved them to the correct positions. I never was able to get the high beam lamp working. This was an early dash harness but a later gauge cluster.

 

 

I would just get another needle.

more so than the needle missing its in overall rough shape. personally i am pretty comfortable with wiring. What yoyr saying mike is that the cluster harness itself disconnects at a (2) 10 pin connectors then i just repin those until dash functions properly?

That's what I did. A white and a blue plug. Up under dash near left of the steering column. I think I had a wiring diagram for a 720.

Mike is correct. There is a dash sub harness that connects on the left side of the dash left of the steering column. One white plug one blue plug. Gauge wiring is run through there, also dimmer switch, cigarette lighter, and radio.

There's an 83 and a half and a 86, you could probably use one of them or combine both of them. Might not even be a difference even...

Do you need a 1981 Cluster?

It is a wiring can of worms to run the late cluster in an early truck.  If you are good with wiring then go for it but if you are not experienced in wirin I would get the correct year cluster.

 

You can install your clock and tac in the cluster show above or put the speedometer from that cluster into yours.

I am heading across the border to Maine in May if you end up needing it. I can ship it out from there as it would be cheaper.
