Brake light-turn signal quandry

Recommended Posts

I want to install a new rear license plate frame that has a row of red LED lights that are supposed to come on with the brake lights.  Only thing is, with my combination brake light and turn signal bulbs being the same bulbs, so how do I wire these LED frame lights so that they don't blink when the turn signals are used, and come on only when the brakes are applied?

I know what my first thought was which was very funny(wire it to the side that is not blinking ).

I suspect you may have to run a wire from the brake light switch to the light bypassing the combination switch, but I do not know for sure if that will work, that could possibly mess up everything.

Not sure if this will work, but it’s what I would do. Have a helper step on the brakes and probe the wires in that go to the tail lights and see which one is hot, now have the helper let go of the brakes and turn on the turn signal, if the wire that was hot for brakes isn’t intermittently hot while the signal is on...that’s your wire to tap for your plate frame.

Anyone know where the "combination switch" for the brake/turn signals is located on an early 72'? The wiring colors on my truck don't match up with the colors indicated in the only 620 schematic I have.

I could be wrong but i thought i read something from datsunmike that said the brake signal travels through the turn signal switch creating the cancellation...

There still should be a brake switch down by the brake pedal....

You'll probably have to do like Wayno said.... take a signal from the brake switch and run a wire to the back plate light....

Crashtd420... you're probably right, simply run a wire from the brake switch back to the license plate frame and ground the frame back there somewhere.  I'd also thought about adding a 3rd brake light on the rear of the cross bed tool box (a much more visible location than the stock brake lights) and this wire could also power that light.

Remember that if you do grab the power from the brake switch it has to be from the side of the switch that only has power when your stepping on the brake, the other side/wire has power all the time even when the vehicle is turned off.

The combination switch is the turn signal assembly which is on the column, that assembly also houses the wipers, headlights, brights, and even the 4 ways on some vehicles, I do not know what the 620 has as I have never owned a 620, if I owned 620s there would be no room on my property for me, so I just decided no 620s or 510s which still  barely left enough room for me, I actually had to build a shed for parts, it's a huge shed, and I have another smaller one for tires, transmissions, hoods, gas tanks, a couple engines and a rototiller.

This, above.

The signals and the brake lights share the same bulb and the steering column switch sorts this out. Run a fresh wire from the pedal switch.
