Fetch
The carrier bearing. I have been through the posts and have not found any particular common problems. I bought the truck about 5 years ago and I knew the bearing needed to be replaced at that time. So, I pulled the driveline took it to a local shop to have the bearing replaced and driveline balanced. So far I have replaced the bearing three times. Last summer my clutch went out and now 8 months later I need to replace it again, #4. To write it is the rubber that is tearing apart, not the actual bearing. To me that reads an out of balance driveline. I have had the alignment checked, I have had two different tire sets, checked the driveline angle and all reads good. Friday I am going to one of the Nissan dealers here in town to discuss what the problem might be. In the meantime anyone have any ideas? Maybe something I am missing? Thanks. Quote Link to comment

Crashtd420
The only thing that pops in my head is what I did .... I think having a carrier bearing means you have a 2 piece drive shaft... After it was balanced did you ever separate the 2 ? I luckily made the mistake before I ever walked out of the shop... I pulled the 2 halves apart to put into the back seat of my truck.. the quickly asked me to come back inside.. fortunately all the u joints and the slip shaft had grease fittings... they align all of those during assembly and balance . So I was able to put the 2 parts back in the correct orientaion..... Quote Link to comment

I do notice my trans does move quit a bit when driving and twists to the right. The rubber insulator around the bearing looks to be torqued to the lower right. Maybe going to a stiffer trans mount? noramost
Thanks for the heads-up, I have over 200k on my 92-D21, no problems yet Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
My 620 rubber isolater rotted away. Couldn't find one so I cut a thin strip of 3/8" rubber conveyor belt (maybe an inch wide?) and wrapped it around the carrier bearing like a jelly roll. Then clamped the holder in place around it. Took several tries to get the diameter just right and the clamping secure enough it wouldn't unravel. It was meant as a temporary fix for a few days, but it worked so well I forgot about it for 3 years and never did replace it. The bearing just allows the driveshaft to spin inside and doesn't really have much of a load on it. Quote Link to comment
Fetch
Thanks Mike, yes I can put in a patch but, I wanted to find out why the rubber is shredding. What you did was replace a flexible piece of rubber for rubber that is less flexible. The last bearing I replaced the rubber was actually torn radially. This does not happen over night, the current bearing has been in not quite a year and a half - 5000 to 6000 miles. Process of elimination, I occasionally have heavy loads and travel a distance, not the problem. The massive torque from the KA-24 (sarcasm), not the problem. Wheel / driveline alignment, not the problem. Driveline itself, it has been balanced, not the problem. I do have a set of air shocks on the rear, not the problem, driveline angle not compromised. Now writing all this down, I think I have figured it out, it is just the way I drive it. It is my DD, putting back and forth to work (sucks but pays the bills), lots of stop and go traffic. On and off the clutch. I think it would last a longer if the truck was an automatic or if I traveled on the freeway. I am going to replace the trans mount for as stiff a mount as I can get. Thanks for reading, if anyone has any other ideas, let me know. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Check the engine mounts. If split the engine will torque over on it's side. (exaggerated) There will be some twisting, that's normal and why rubber mounts are used. It could just be a poor design. The 620 looks like this... Even solid rubber had some give. It ran quiet and smooth and was infinitely better than the torn up one that flopped around and banged every time the driveshaft took up the slack on a shift. Quote Link to comment
