Speedymaru
I have a 78 620 with a Weber that I’m wanting to make sound a little better. I eventually want to put a header on it and maybe bump up the pipe size a little, but for now I’m thinking I’ll just replace the muffler to add a little sound. I’ve heard mixed opinions on cherry bombs. I’ve heard the thrush turbo muffler is good. What about just replacing the stock muffler with a piece of straight pipe? Would that cut down on back pressure too much? Just want some advice. Quote Link to comment
G-Duax
Any of the 'turbo' mufflers are good. Hate the sound of a strait through glass pack style, and some don't flow all that good anyway. Needing back pressure is a myth.... Just beware of the fact that when the exhaust flows better, there is less exhaust left in the cylinder to dilute the new incoming charge, and you will need a little more fuel (larger jets). Speedymaru
Alright cool, thank you. Any opinion on taking out the muffler and replacing with flex pipe? Quote Link to comment
G-Duax
Don't.... Don't be an ass, and disturb everyone else on the road, and the people you drive by. 1 Quote Link to comment
Speedymaru
That’s what I’m trying to avoid. I don’t want it super loud, I was just hoping to make it sound a little better. So would the turbo muffler be the best bet? Quote Link to comment
G-Duax
They seem to be the most pleasing, deep tone mufflers out there. Cheery bombs (and other strait through glass packs) are more raspy. Quote Link to comment
Speedymaru
Alright cool. I’m trying to stay away from the raspy sound. Does the turbo muffler add more sound? And is it much of an improvement over the stock one? Quote Link to comment
racerx
Dynamax, magnaflow and no header. Quote Link to comment
Dolomite
Headers suck ass on l series, they don’t seal for shit and they give no extra power. My favorite setup for a bit more sound is a magnaflow as far back as possible with the longest cherrybomb you can fit before it as a resonator. It provides a bit of both worlds and cuts the droning sound turbo mufflers can have. When I was younger, I ran a 24” cherrybomb to a uncapped supertrap...obnoxiously loud but it sounded awesome. banzai510(hainz)
Knowing what I know now I would get a stock type muffler and just increase the pipe size. I like quiet. Esp for trucks. Walkerexhaust.com website . I have a Dynomax Super turbo on my 521. Morning its kinda loud. but quiets abit once warmed up. seems anytime one runs a downdraft it makes that Honda go faster sound with a straight thru type muffler(turbo or cherrybomb type, Cam type) with sidefrafts that set up sounds better. I have a Dynomax Ultraflow in a Turbo style and its fairly quiet Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Glad you mentioned that. I don't like the nasal sound of the small diameter pipe. Sounds like an old Honda Mini Trail 50. One way to avoid that sound is by putting the muffler as close to the end of the pipe as possible. Quote Link to comment
