Potential 620

I'm a newbie who looked at a truck recently. 78 5 speed l20b. I should've taken pictures myself, but here are the pictures that was posted and sent to me

Listing has it priced at $3800. There is some rust under the hood, but not so much under the bed. On the bed, there are some surface rust spots.

Took it for a test drive, and the breaks feel real stiff, but I'm sure that's an easy fix.

questions:

1. do you think the bolts that plug the holes (from different mirror configs) on the door can be removed and filled or would it better to just get another set of doors and repaint this truck (wanting to get it white potentially)

2. Any other questions I should ask the owner?

3. Can't tell what's a good price on 620s yet.

4. is the bench stock in your observation?

Thank you for all your answers ahead of time. Pardon my newb questions. This is my second post and you all are fine human beings in your quick responses to my introduction post! I was also looking at a king ca, but it's only 4 speed and I feel like changing out the transmission to 5 speed might be too pricey to add on top of what he's asking for

I think you need to ask what has been done to the truck to make it worth the asking price?

I like your perspective :)

Said that it's mostly stock, and in great working condition. Generic answer I guess. He's definitely willing to hear some offers. I just don't know what a fair offer is nowadays. Clean title, passes smog

3800 doesn't sound outrageous.... runs drives, clean title, passes smog... rust sounds minimal....

Yes the doors are repairable... and that interior looks all stock to me...

Also I think 78 already has discs and ball joints upfront but not 100% sure.....

It seems like a sweet truck.... try offering 3000 but i would pay 3500, even the full 3800 if he didn't budge....

If your looking for a project you can get something cheaper... if you want something to drive, maintain and later modify this seems like a good start.....

Goodluck....

I’d take a look at the smog sheet and see how well it passed, if it passed with low numbers, I’d be a lot more willing than if it passed on the high end. I tend to want my cars either non smog or obd2, I don’t like the roll and sniff bullshit.

I want to drive and maintain. Thanks for your opinion

Totally, I think it'd be easier to find a car with disc brakes and 5speed in the later 70s than the pre75 year models though as a starting point. I mean, I did see a 74 up in oregon with an l18 and 5 speed... hmmmmm......

The craigslist ad says the plates are good to August so we can only hope that it passed smog legally (above the table) last time around. For Los Angeles area, that's a typical price for a vehicle that appears to be in decent condition.

It wouldn't hurt to negotiate a bit, but it's a fair price as-is, especially since it already has a ball joint/disc brake front end.

Though I wonder if it has the Acura Vigor 5 cylinder motor. Says it's a 5-cylinder!

At best your are looking at a 40 year old truck that appears to have had basic general maintenance, nothing major in repairs from outward appeerances.  You are looking at a project at best.

There is no telling if it will continue running fair or at all.  The seller being fague in his response to your questions is a complete turn off to me.

There is a difference in pricing and value from the West Coast to the East Coast.

This is not a king cab or a deluxe truck.  It is more desirable because of the front disk brakes but is less desirable because it has to pass smog in my oppinion.

It appears to have at some time during its history had a paint job.  I has a non matching interior and appears to have not had any major mechanical work done to it.

If I was buying it I would have a mechanic look it over and maybe even run a compression test on.

I would offer $2000 for it and walk if you can not get it for $2500 or less.

Remeber all 40 year old vehicles will need more than average repairs to keep them on the road if you intend on daily driving it.

I looked at the pictures again and found this.

The front vallnce is hammered and pushed back on the drivers side. it look like the drivers fender is buckled at the top of the wheel well.  I am guess that raising the hood will sho that the drivers side inner fender is buckled as well as the radiator support being pushed back.

I would look this truck over vary closely before buying it.

After seing what I just described and  if this is indeed the problems with this truck I would walk away.

Bumper is also very slightly buckled. The bumper (for some reason known only to Nissan) was bolted to the front fenders on the outside edge, so ANY good bump will also stress and buckle the fenders also. Also the bumper is mostly cosmetic and barely bolted to the frame in the first place.

Fenders have holes for fender mirrors???

Someone has replaced the windshield rubber and done a not so good job on the right corners. May leak. Likewise the rear window seal has some splits in it.

The grill trim on the underside of the front of the hood is missing.

Dash cracked but this is totally normal. Hole for radio needs filling.

Steering wheel top clam shell is broken.

Still a nice truck. Just pointing out what you already have noticed.

Paramount, CA car, for sure it passes smog before u buy and not one of those places where he paid $250 to pass smog. Make sure its a legit smog test.

Yeah, he replied today and mentioned he takes it to a guy for $150

I might have to walk away from this one, since I don't feel like it's going to pass smog elsewhere

i did ask for a picture of the actual test, and hopefully it'll tell me something positive

I thought the "notched" bench seat was only on the early trucks?  If this is an early truck in disguise, it won't have the front disc brakes.  That would help explain the hard pedal.  I don't see the coil on the inner fender where it belongs.  Is that bent shift lever a dogleg?   Non-matching glovebox door as well.  Maybe a good deal at half the price?  I'd inspect before walking away.  Look at the ID tag and verify age.  There is also a number stamped in the frame on the front top passenger side near the fuel pump area.

Coil's right there beside the brake master cylinder reservoirs...

Has a '78-'79 grill and disc brake rims. Driver's door jam has the month and year built.

Full bench seats used through '73 only. Possible because of the slightly shorter 4 speed (26") Notched seat shows being used '73 through '75 at least, maybe right through. Same notched seat as used for manual or automatics so not that. King Cabs had bucket seats so not needed.

Many years of buying used vehicles and the fact that I hate to see unsuspecting people pay hard earned money for polished turds!

I mean to quote Crashed post!  OOPS!
