I just got a 1980 720 with an L20 it has been sitting for 2 years. It was a daily driver until parked, now i cannot get it to start. It has a new coil which was put on by the previous owner. The timing seems to be on point. There is fuel pumping into the carb. Im at a real loss.. I guess for the price of get it out of my yard I cant whine too much.

Ran when parked is a common bullshit story. Luckily, an l20b is as simple as it gets.

Do you have the three things you need for an engine to run?

1. Fuel- is fuel spraying when you pump the throttle?

2. Spark- are you getting spark when you ground a plug?

3. Compression- have you checked it?

These three questions need answered first.

How can you check the timing if not running?

Pull a plug wire off and put an old spark plug in the end. Have some one turn the engine over with the starter. It's simple... do you see a spark????

Engine off, pump the throttle while loking down the carb. Do you see gas squirted into the primary barrel closest the valve cover???

IS THE CHOKE ON?????

I checked the timing by turning the engine over to TDC and looked at the rotor on the distributor which was pointing at the #1 terminal.

I have checked spark using a spark plug already, it has strong spark.

Finally, accelerator pump is pumping in fuel when carb is opened.

The pointing of the rotor is very plus/minus but does confirm the distributor is close enough to at least fire.

Spark and fuel so it should at least try to fire a few cylinders when cranking with the starter.

Pull the plugs. They may be wet with with gas.

#2 & #3 were wet last night and #1 & #4 were dry. im going to get new plugs and wires after work tonight since it needs them anyways and put 5 gallons of fresh gas in it.

Make sure they are the right ones for the motor, not just what came out.... try to get just regular ngk....

Distributor pointing g to #1 at TDC does not mean the cam is at TDC.

Suck, squish, bang, blow. What's missing?

Does it crank over? You are quite vague with what's happening.

Could it just be bad gas?

EDIT: I just read second to last post from OP.

Problem solved; post tits.

I was the recent winner of a 85 2wd extra cab sold to me by a friend. He had it sitting because of running problems he couldn’t fix. So here goes.. it starts and runs ok but a little rough, but when you put it in drive it wants to die and runs really rough.. I have changed cap, plugs, wires... when listening to it I hear a rattle/gargle cling from behind the carb I think from one of the vacuum valve.. any ideas or fixes.. thanks for all your help

Dman85 you are now approved to post on Ratsun so probably best if you start your own post on starting problems so that any answers and suggestions are not mistaken for 541Minitruck's. You may have much different problems than he does and with all the back and forth it can get very confusing.

..and welcome to Ratsun. Looking forward to giving you a hand with this.
