Anyone out there capable of restoring oem Datsun vin plates?

OK . so I bought a 1966 datsun spl311 and for some strange reason the previous owner drilled a half inch hole right through the center of the Vin plate for racing hood pins. to me this is almost a dealbreaker as far as putting any real money into a restoration. Has anyone out there had that kind of repair work done? Or re-made thanks.

Holy cow that may be the answer ! When I get home from work tonight I’ll have to look at my vin plate and see if it is correct . if so I’m sure a jeweler or somebody like that can stamp the numbers to the plate and make it correct-ish thanks!

Nice touch to a mildly customized car.

 

For some reason, the black paint was almost completely worn off of mine...

I thought since I was replacing it anyway I would get one that said A15 so I could have a "numbers matching" car...   :rofl:

My number stamps were a wee bit bigger than stock, but it looks okay to me. I have since learned Harbor Freight sells some stamps that are a closer match to stock. so I may redo it at some point...

And this illustrates the down side of these "replacement" ID plates.  It/s too easy to forge a "correct? vehicle.

Yeh gas can pretty much wipe the paint off them. The repo ones are a slightly different font and smaller size - but only those who know would actually notice. I have heard that REVIVE JALOPY do authentic tags but I think that was only for JDM cars/ written in Japanese.

So ! If you are paying extra for an "authentic" vehicle, as verified by the ID tag, you should verify the dimensions of the stamped letters on the ID tags ?  Still  stinks like a deceptive dodge to me .  Fake ID plates equals a shitty deal to me !  Fraud is too easily propagated by these fake ID tags .  Buyers be aware !  Tatty ID tags on a 50 year vehicles are much more believable than pristine repro tags !  Look at the chassis or rails to verify the real vehicle ID, not the readily available fake repro ID tags !

I agree.

 

But I hope you realize that without Chinese re-pops of fenders, floor pans, and body trim, that half the cars that roll through a Barrett-Jackson auction would still be sitting out in a field somewhere.

And I doubt any Datsun will ever reach that status.

 

Personally I think that copy-cat parts suck, and putting chinkese, or ty-won crap on my truck makes me want to puke,

but if it wasn't for re-pop parts, half the Datsuns running today would be out in that same field, including my truck.

Not with the VIN stamped into the firewall, and on the ID plate on the door (which they do not make reproductions of)...  

 

But I am also a person that believes "numbers matching" is kinda bullshit. Especially when it comes to Datsuns...

 

 

And I keep the original plate in an envelope in the glovebox just in case...   :rofl:

Oh, and theres a place in french that does them too.

 

Doesnt mean its right, but people will do it to make a vehicle all tidy (for one reason) - whether is right or wrong is a personal thing, and some might use it to try and deceive which is wrong (historical racing, upgrade model change etc). Misrepresentation to someone else at a sale should not be tolerated and I hope that no one here would try it.

 

At the end of the day I will check anything I buy as much as I can and get as much knowledge as I can so that Im satisfied when I hand over the cash - unless you are one of the few that I trust.

 

Just so everyone knows, I have one in my datsun as it didnt come with one in all the parts that made up the project when I brought it, and I really didnt like the plain ali sheet with the code punched in it that was used to get it back on the road. If I ever sell it I will let the buyer know and the VIN stamp is there too to confirm in the system.

Cars have the VIN right there, stamped into the cowl just above and behind the valve cover. Trucks are on top of the right front frame rail. 620 and 720 just ahead of the engine mount and 520/521 just behind (IIRC) From around '80? model year the VIN is also visible on the dash through the front windshield.
