Headliner / glass / dash install order

Recommended Posts

Just finished painting my goon!!!

I need some advice from ones who have taken a 510 down this far.

Obviously the headliner needs to go in before the windshield but will it cause me much problems if I install the dash before the windshield? I'd like to get the dash back in so I can move it under its own power but not if it'll make my window install a huge pain.

Anyone installed the windshield with or without the dash installed?

It's a 69 dash. That's what I figured was the case but I wanted to check with someone that's done it before.

Was hoping to put the dash in before the glass but I may just hold off...

You might try just putting in a few bolts finger tight and plugging it in? That way it could be easily removed later?

In the end, I feel like not doing it "correctly" just means more work for you.

Love the color on the wagon.

No experience with the 69 dash, but I've done several 70's 510 windshields with the dash on without issues. Same goes for the 620's. Although, I agree with you two to do the dash before the windshield.

By the way, what size and offset are those wheels? Do they clear the rear quarters? SSR's?

Thanks for the tips guys.

DatsunFreak: yes I'll probably be going the ebay route. Looks like the best priced option.

Fivetenguy: yeah I'm happy with the color. It's code 817 "dark yellow" or "cream sand" depending on what chart you look at. My paint guy friend mixed a perfect match. The SSR's are staggered 15" and I think they'll rub on the back but we'll see. Came with the car and I haven't measured them yet.

DanielC: I'm not to concerned about firing the engine but the steering column bolts to the dash so having the dash installed will help a bunch with rolling it around.

Ok so I bought a headliner and started installing it. The previous owner labeled the bows so I’m pretty sure I got them in the right order. Problem is I can’t get them to stay up right, they keep spinning and drooping down even when I put tension on the headliner. Is there some sort of clip or wire to keep them upright that maybe the PO lost?

Also there is a cluster 3 holes in a triangle shape that the bows hang from on each side, is there a specific one of the 3 holes to use?

For me, normally the tension of the headliner keeps them straight. Also never seen them fall over either...

Maybe a wee bit of epoxy to hold them in place?

Ok so I’m not finished with the headliner but I have it clamped in place.

I kept having trouble with the bows staying up right. The more I looked at other people’s pics I realized the bows are supposed to have washers on the ends. Once I installed those it added just enough tension to keep all but one of the bows up right. The front bow I ended up making a tie wire to hook it the the roof frame and that’s keeping it where it needs to be. I think I got it now! Just need some more heat, stretching and glue to finish up.

Thanks for all the tips guys.
